English summary: In recent scholarship war and violence in the 20th century are understood as reflections of modernity. National Socialism and stalinism, Italian fascism and the New Deal in the USA are seen as results of modernity. This book, however, underlines the importance of the pre-modern roots of the violent excesses of the 20th century. It places the experiences with the totalitarian dictatorships in Russia, the Soviet Union and China into the context of modern ideas and pre-modern living conditions.
