The best basic cookery book I've ever used. ( )

In the U.K., the Good Housekeeping Cookery Book is a well-established favourite - I don't know about
elsewhere. This is the 1985 edition which I first saw on a yacht and bought as soon as I stepped ashore!

Excellent! These all-encompassing large cookery books seem to have attracted some adverse criticism
in recent years from poseurs who claim to be the all-wise prophets of modern eating. Well, they can go and
eat their own over-fancy, poorly designed and ludicrously type-set cookery books as far as I am concerned.
This one is excellent, and disproves the self-interested theory outlined above. Good recipes, clearly
presented and well illustrated - 11/10!

Definitely one of my eight Dessert Island books! ( )

Good old fashioned British cookery. My Ma has the 1948 edition and comparison with this is revealing... As it says in the foreword "Completely revised and updated" but all the staples are still in there and cook up fine in my experience. It's true, there is not much awareness of any non-British cuisine but that is not what this book is about and it will never be your only cookery book but it will be referred to again and again. ( )

If the mark of a good cookbook is how stained the pages are from actually cooking the recipes in it, then this must qualify as my favourite cookbook. If I doubt for basic information, it's the text I turn to most often and several of the recipes in it remain firm favourites.

Other cooks and cookbooks may come and go, may be more beautifully illustrated with more adventurous recipes, but this remains a standard. ( )

My copy dates from the sixties and although old-fashioned it is still used often. Although many of the recipes are regarded as dated the detailed instructions are still valid. The chapter for jams and marmalade is excellent. ( )
