A well told story about the people of Waterville, Maine who are trying to rebuild their lives after the War Between the States is over. Frederic returns from the battlefield to find out his fiancee has married another man. But he will come to realize strong feelings for the sister, who he thinks is too young for him.

In the second story Emily (Frederic's sister) has finally found love in giving her heart to Robert, the area pastor. But when his position sends him out of state and they are forced to be apart, Emily must conquer her bitterness or risk losing that special bond of love they share.

In the 3rd story Louisa and Peter (who you already know from stories one and two) are finally engaged, but Peter leaves town suddenly and Louisa's anger and hurt make her reach out to another man. Can Peter return in time to save their relationship?

The author did a good job of writing one big story and breaking it up into 3 short ones. All three stories showed how God can heal broken hearts and help people learn to love again. ( )
