What’s Heaven? by Maria Shriver. Library Section 9 A: Juvenile (Grades K-5), Religion and Values. What should a parent say to a child when a loved one dies? How does a parent explain the concept of a soul, and heaven as a place where loved ones live on with God? Knotty concepts, certainly, but this comforting book helps parents explain them in a very understandable way.
In the foreward, Shriver says she got the idea for this book when she had to explain to her own children what happened to their great-grandmother, Rose Kennedy, upon her death. The questions, childlike and thought-provoking, came from her own children, her nieces and nephews. Lucky for us, she could share those questions and answers with us, to help us in time of need, or just when our little ones begin to grapple with the concept of death and heaven.
The text is about Kate, whose great-grandmother has just died. Over a few days, Kate’s mother explains very basic answers to Kate’s questions, such as, how will great-grandma breathe if she is put in a box in the ground, what a soul is, how loved ones live on in our memories, and in the things we do and in the way we do them, and what heaven is.
The illustrations are in pastels, which to me as an artist, was always a challenging medium. The illustrator presses hard on the pastels in the earthly scenes, using deep, vibrant colors. The scenes in heaven are done in lighter, airier colors and are more amorphous.
I hope this book gives you support, comfort and peace as you grapple with these concepts with the children in your care. Our church library should be the first place you look for solutions and support for any family crisis or challenge. ( )
