The Glorious Burden The American Presidency, by Stefan Lorant (read 14 Jun 2019) This is a 947 page book, published in 1968. It surveys every presidential election in U. S. history, beginning with Washington's election in 1789 and continuing with every presidential election down through 1964. It is profusely illustrated and details the campaigns of each year, The coverage becomes more extensive as we approach modern times. I am not sure I learned much new, but I greatly enjoyed some of the election years, such as 1948 when every expert said Truman would lose, as did every pollster. and 1964, when Goldwater was so decisively defeated as he deserved to be. There are lots of statistics and an extensive bibliography. I found it great fun to relive every presidential campaign. This is a book any student of American politics can enjoy.
