Denna guide till Pullmans trilogi "Den mörka materian" innehåller mycket. Den rymmer en genomgång av böckerna, karaktärerna, Pullmans liv och vad som har influerat honom, olika tolkningar av trilogin i teater- och filmform, särskilda kapitel som analyserar det vetenskapliga, religiösa och politiska innehållet, korta faktarutor om allt från ordlistor till en kort presentation av I Ching, och mycket mycket mer.

Simpson är starkast när det gäller genomgången av Pullmans böcker och av de olika litterära inspirationskällorna. Han har också ett särskilt intresse för de vetenskapliga frågor som trilogin väcker och anspelar på, vilket också får fruktbart utrymme i guideboken.

Tyvärr upprepar sig Simpson alldeles för mycket. Hans i och för sig mycket behändiga (alfabetiskt ordnade) genomgångar av personer, platser, respektive centrala termer säger sällan något annat eller mer än vad som redan har tagits upp i tidigare kapitel.

Allt som allt är det ändå en bra guidebok, som inte faller i fällan att attackera eller försvara Pullmans antireligiösa program. De aspekterna diskuterar Simpson sakligt och fokuserar sedan på böckernas värld. Han ger inte heller _för_ mycket detaljer, något som guideböcker till skönlitteratur inte sällan gör, med resultatet att längtan tillbaka till böckerna minskar eller helt dör ut. Den första halvan av The Rough Guide to His Dark Materials rekommenderas varmt, varefter resten kan behandlas som en uppslagsbok efter behov. ( )
