This account of Dave Langford's 1980 TAFF trip* to the Boston Worldcon is probably his best ever piece of fanwriting. Originally published in instalments in diverse fanzines, this collected volume combines travelogue, con report and humour in equal measures. The package is enlivened by illustrations from some of fandom's top cartoonists of the time. I've dined out on Dave's comment about "looking for the words 'air conditioning' the way I look for 'real ale' at home" ever since.

*New readers start here: TAFF stands for 'Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund' and exists to raise money to send an impoverished British fan to the Worldcon in the USA (or bring an equivalent US fan over here in the odd years when the Worldcon is held in Europe...). The one requirement is that the successful candidate writes a report of their trip for wider circulation. ( )
