This is one of those O'Malley books that would make my wife groan. The humor is "corny" as O'Malley would say. It's all basically word play. That works for me. Kids have a harder time with it, somply because they don't always catch the joke on their own. If you need to explain the joke, it's wasted. ( )

In a taste of the "corn" to follow, the front cover of Gimme Cracked Corn and I Will Share proclaims that it is, "egg-secuted by Kevin O'Malley." As a fan of all things "corny," I loved it, however, it may be another one of those children's books wasted on children! Only older children will get all of the "yolks', but younger ones may still find it "punny." ( )

In a variation on the classic Jewish story of The Dream and the Treasure, Chicken dreams of cracked corn buried under a pink pig sleeping in a barn. When he journeys there, the pig tells the chicken that he dreams of cracked corn buried in a chicken coop. The chicken returns home, finds the corn, and shares it with his barnyard friends. The old jokes will probably go over the heads of most young readers. ( )
