Mason Mintz, "a weird kid," is his neighbor and doesn't seem to have a lot of stuff. But he does have a doodle flute, whose music "was not like any music Kevin Spoon had ever heard." The flute is unique, Kevin wants to buy it with money or all his stuff, Mason declines and, SPOILER, Kevin learns the value of sharing and appreciating others for non-materialistic qualities.
A typical Pinkwater, which is not a bad thing. The illustrations are colorful; the doodle flute's music is pictured as a rainbow. ( )
