Fiction. Literature. HTML:

Sweetgrass is a historic tract of land in South Carolina that has been home to the Blakely family for eight generations. But Sweetgrass--named for the indigenous grass that grows in the area--is in trouble. Taxes are skyrocketing. Bulldozers are leveling the surrounding properties. And the Blakelys could be forced to sell the one thing that continues to hold their disintegrating family together.

In this poignant novel of hope, acceptance and the powerful gift of forgiveness, Mary Alice Monroe paints an intimate portrait of a family that must learn to unravel old patterns and weave together a new future.

A long way from Prince of Tides but the echoes are there. There is drowning in this story but redemption as well. A few questions left unanswered or answered indirectly. In the end a feel good story. ( )

A sweet book about family secrets, loss and healing. ( )

Interesting info about sweetgrass and its importance for basket builders and the Carolina shoreline. Mama June keeps a secret about her dead son that causes issues for her living son. Her husband has a stroke, wants the land to stay in the family, a son who wants to help but has nightmares about how his brother died, and an aunt more interested in selling the land to developers. Liked the solution of giving the land to conservation groups. So sorry that Mama June's friendship with the roommate- aunt never got properly corrected. ( )

Love this author but this book was same plot as her other books.Fractured family comes back to save the homestead. Remove the turtles from one book and insert plot saving Sweetgrass. The book was predictable. If you want a light summer story this is enjoyable, the character development was good. Difficult to get through this one. ( )

And time has come now, child, for you to learn the knot that ties us all together - The circle unbroken, And when your fingers talk just right that circle will go out and out again - past slavery and freedom, old ways and new, and your basket will hold the past - Just as surely and tightly as my arms now hold and circle you. -Margot Theis Raven Circle Unbroken
