(3.56) | None | Twenty-first-century Dublin was chic, seductive, and affluent. At the glittering heart of the city is Anna Kelly Sweeney, a moderately successful writer, who lives in exclusive south Dublin with her wealthy property developer husband Alex and her son Rory. Thus insulated from harsh and unpleasant realities, Anna's life is spent in the endless round of launches, lunches and opening nights that makes up the city's literary scene. She meets the handsome but irresponsible Vincy and prepares to abandon home, husband and son for the dream of an all-conquering love. Anna's life is in crisis, and as events unfold, her sense of herself as both a woman and a writer is shattered. This is a modern-day morality tale, an intelligent, funny, critical but always fiercely humane insight into contemporary Irish culture and society.… (more) |

Tramvaj sestoupala s hukotem dolů z nového skleněného mostu, klenoucího se nad nevyzpytatelnou, tajemnou hladinou Velkého kanálu, a lehce klouzala dál směrem k srdci města, podobná pomalému vozu viktoriánské horské dráhy. | |

Quotations |
Nesmírně ráda by si vychutnávala ticho, sotva rušené šuměním vln a tlumenými výkřiky racků. Vědela ale, že to nemůže udělat. Nefungovalo by to. Nikdo by tomu nevěřil. Very, very mixed reactions to this. It's a present-day repackaging of the Anna Karenina story set in Ireland, and it's surprisingly as clever as it ought to be and works well (I know it sounds like a dreadful premise). Another strong positive was the way that the author used an omniscient narrator that only was only in the mood to share its omniscient knowledge somewhat randomly so you would get these unexpected flashes of information and the whole thing was so strategically done, I was super impressed. On to the negatives ... again with the mockery of world of arts and letters -- a lot of snide caricatures that are a little embarrassing to read because you get the impression that the author finds them scandalously biting and they're not at all. The adultery angle, which is clearly going to play a significant role due to the whole premise of the thing, is also more than a little tiresome, and makes it painfully obvious that Ireland hasn't had the divorce for that long because it would appear that it still strikes people as a very poignant and hand-wringy situation.
Grade: B+
Recommended: You know, I am complaining but all my complaints are pretty nitpicky and this would most likely be more than satisfactory for people interested in contemporary Irish fiction and also fans of Anna Karenina. ( )
