El gran valor de esta obra radica en la minuciosa descripción que el autor hace de las costumbres, creencias, forma de vida, situación social y política, además de multitud de otros detalles que introducen al lector en la China de los siglos XVI y XVII. Por ello tuvo un gran éxito desde su misma publicación, como lo demuestra el hecho de que se reeditara en cincuenta y siete ocasiones en menos de un siglo y que fuera traducida a casi todas las lenguas occidentales.
Escritores y viajeros contemporáneos a González de Mendoza vieron en esta obra el perfecto libro de viajes, precisamente por su acercamiento a la realidad sin caer en fantasías ni tópicos, fallos comunes en este tipo de obras por aquellos años, lo que provocó que la Historia del Gran Reino de la China tuviera mucha repercusión en los libros de viajes posteriores, tanto españoles como europeos. De hecho, hasta el siglo XVIII fue considerado el libro de mayor autoridad sobre China. ( )
