Walser's famous novella is perhaps the closest German counterpart of Abigail's party — sending up the desperate competitiveness of middle-class life in the late seventies. But it goes beyond social satire to look at how little our view of ourselves corresponds to the way other people see us, and at the tensions that can be created when we have to maintain the façade of our outer selves under pressure. Very nicely done. ( )

The grass is not always greener on the other side and appearances can be deceiving. Really well written. ( )
