I first discovered her delightful picture books via my sister-in-law, who had an entire shelf of Boynton’s books for my nephew. Now, with my own little boy, I’m really enjoying them. Her books all claim “serious silliness” on the back cover. I’d agree: we all enjoy the light-hearted silliness, but a child may still learn something. more detailed review on my blog A Boynton rhyme about the going to bed routine illustrated with lots of adorable animals in a Noah's-Ark-like boat. They take bath, brush their teeth, exercise, and finally say good night. Then The Moon is high. The Sea is deep. They Rock and rock and rock to sleep This is my absolute favorite Boynton, and that is saying a lot. Somehow it's brilliant. The rhyme is so memorable that after reading it several times you can read it to your kids from memory without having the book with you... and the kids will follow along perfectly. It works on very young kids, and doesn't start to wear out until they are maybe three (About the same time most Boynton's did for my older one. Boynton's are really prefect for the 2-to-3-yr-old range.). Many a night we put our kids to sleep just by reciting this book with the lights off. For anyone concerned about the Noah reference being too "religious", rest assured the only one who will notice is the adult reading the book. A great bedtime time. I highly recommend. We love this book so much. Calm, sweet, and just a little bit silly. Got it memorized. no reviews | add a review

The moon is high. The sea is deep.Boynton's inimitable animal characters have graced the pages of scads of picture books over the years. She has an extraordinary knack for knowing what appeals to small children: simple rhymes, goofy animals in goofy settings, and sweet, comforting stories. This book, along with her many other board-book titles (Moo, Baa, La La La!, But Not the Hippopotamus, and others) will surely remain a favorite. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

This is my favorite children's book. I have read this book so many times I have it meomrized. I read this book to my toddler class over and over. This is definetly a book that I recommend to all teachers.
You could pick out the ryhming words throughtout the book. You could also talk about the routine that people have before bedtime. You could ask your students about their own bedtime routines. (
