This story starts out with a woman throwing herself into the Thames. Natalie Meadows was a friend of Ellen Warwick, who is now dead, and Natalie is a major suspect. Dying is a good way of getting away from the blame while giving her time to investigate the murder. She finds that Ellen had a lot of secrets and that the murderer is still out there, still trying to cover his trail.

Not as satisfying as his other mysteries, this did keep me guessing throughout about who did it and the why of what they did. Interesting but not quite enough. As a first novel it's not bad but in comparison to some of his later works not quite good enough. ( )
