Interesting story. I didn't know much about Harlequin before I read this graphic novel. However, the graphic was a bit so-so. Can't say I did like the art very much and if the story had not been so engaging would I probably have given Harlequin Valentine a lower rating. ( )

Identities shift as Harlequin gives his heart to a mortal woman, but fails have it returned.

Harlequin Valentine is a bloody and romantic short story later rewritten into a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman & illustrated by John Bolton, based on the old Commedia dell'arte and Harlequinade pantomime. The short story has been republished in Gaiman's collection of short stories in "Fragile Things."

The story takes place on February 14 with the Harlequin giving Missy his heart, literally speaking, by nailing it to her door. The story follows the Missy as she tries to discover who gave her this gift, and what she does with it (watch out for unexpected twists!). The merry Harlequin follows her the whole time, wondering what Missy (his current Columbina) will do with it.

At the back of the book is Gaiman's essay, "Notes on a Harlequinade," which tells us a little about the old harlequin stories of the Italian Commedia dell'arte and the English Harlequinade.

This is a poignant yet punchy tale about love. John Bolton's art is beautiful, and it certainly adds to the story. Lovely! ( )
