Captain Roskill was the official Royal Navy historian of WWII. His three volume set called "The War at Sea" covers everything but the Pacific theatre. There's separate series for that. He has been literate and prolific.
This work deals with WSC's interaction with the Admirals in charge of the various stations where the war was intense between 1940 and 1943. Capt. Roskill is very much a believer in WSC as a very "hands-on" manger of the war at sea, and often had advice for the on the spot commanders. Sometimes, this lead to unfortunate outcomes. There was considerable differences in the opinions of Roskill and that of Jacob Marder another prominent historian of the war at sea. This book contains an appendix referring to the controversy and explains something of Roskill's methods in coming to his opinions.
