For both the general reader and textile students, the history of the Indian textile industry is traced from the early days to the rise of Gandhi, who encouraged the return of handspinning and weaving of cotton as a way to independence, culminating in the post-independence birth of the Indian textile industry. The origins of many fabric types which have profoundly influenced worldwide textile production are studied. These include chintz, gingham, calico, muslin and denim. Includes a bibliography and an index. The appendix contains a glossary and a list of chintzes and Indian cottons that are suitable and available for use in the restoration of old and historic houses. The author has been a journalist, importer of Indian fabrics and businesswoman. No library descriptions found. |
