I LOVE MEDDLERS. ( )

Great story and while Lemire’s scratchy, expressive and very basic drawing style tells the story effectively, I had to knock down a star simply because I do tend to love drawings that have been more laboured over. Then again, sometimes stick figures do the job too but I just kept wishing he’d made more of an effort here. It’s a completely personal point of view and really has no bearing here coming as it does from an artist who hasn’t done any work for at least a couple of months now. So easy to be critical of others, eh? ( )

While Volume 3 of the Essex County series stands more solidly on its own than the first volume, I still disappoints. Some resolutions are only hinted at and others are pushed into the reader's face. A chart at the end is almost a declaration of acknowledged failed narrative. The entire Essex County trilogy is a decidedly mixed blessing. ( )

4.5 stars. The end to the Essex County trilogy is as poignant as the others, with the same (and more) interlocking lives. This one has less hockey and more back history. I love Anne's "meddling" and caring in the life of the LaBoeuf boys and the recurring bird. Despite being relatively short word-wise, this is an epic family story. My only (worthless) complaint is I don't like the strange huge noses. ( )
