Summary: Tanya can see fairies, fairies who like to make mischief and cast evil spells on her. As she spends time at her grandmother's house over the holidays, she begins to unravel a mystery that threatens to pull her into the world of the fairies.

My notes:
These are some of my favourite books. Don't be put off by the fairies because they are more like the fairies in mythology than the ones in little kid books. They are mischievous and sneaky.

Book notes and screen notes: There are three books in this series: 13 Treasures, 13 Curses and 13 Secrets.

Creative and entertaining modern fairytale.

One frustration; the authors repeated use of the word gypsy (considered by many to be a slur) to describe the local witch living in the woods. Author clearly knows the more appropriate term, romani, since she uses it to describe the womans caravan home. That character is also very much built of stereotypes. ( )

Firstly, I want to comment on the narrator. She was excellent. Her voice suited the story and the main character. Her narration held me to the story, just as much as the author's writing. And I think it's important to mention that.

The main character in this book is 13, which suggests the book is written for younger readers. However, it felt to me that she was more mature and sophisticated. Half the time, I forgot Tanya was only thirteen. That doesn't mean that I think young people are not or cannot be mature and sophisticated, it means that the story (I feel) will appeal to young adult, and even adults too.

The supporting characters are placed well and compliment the main character. The plot was well thought out and kept me guessing. The mystery was realistic and believable. In fact, I enjoyed this story a lot more than I thought I would. I will definitely be looking for the next book in the series. And I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading books filled with mystery, adventure, and fantastical elements. ( )

Book description
Tanya is no ordinary girl. She can see fairies. But not the fairies we imagine. Evil fairies who cast spells on her, rousing her from her sleep and propelling her out of bed. At wit's end with her daughter's inexplicable behavior, Tanya's mother sends her away to live with her grandmother at Elvesden Manor, a secluded countryside mansion on the outskirts of a peculiar Essex town.

There is plenty to explore, as long as Tanya stays away from Hangman's Wood- a vast stretch of forest, full of catacombs and notorious for people losing their lives. Fifty years ago a girl vanished in the woods, a girl Tanya's grandmother will not speak of. As Tanya learns more about this girl, she finds herself dangerously close to vanishing into the fairy realm forever.

Debut author Michelle Harrison weaves an intricate mystery into a beautiful and haunting fantasy that captures a rich world of fairy lore where only the color red can offer protection.
