So this is n o t my usual read, but when I was clearing the books out of my closet, I found this entire series.

If there was a book series that was extremely influential on my childhood, it was the Mandie series. I remember a time when I skipped school so that I could read this series, and my mom got so mad, but I was completely fine because I had managed to read three Mandie books...in one day! Of course I had a splitting headache that night and a not-so-pleased mother, but to younger me - it was worth it.

This was literally such a joy to come back to!

Yes, the writing was way cheesier than I had remembered, and things moved oddly fast, but I still loved it.

I'm personally part Chickasaw, and since I last read this series, have not only learned so much about my own Native American family and history, but the history that was going on in the era that this series is set in. Because of this, I have to say I got so much more from this book, this time around!

Of course my favorite characters were fun to see again, and though I found Mandie slightly annoying, I can totally see why I wanted to have adventures like her. Joe is a literal heartthrob, even at such a young age, and I can't wait to read the book later in the series when they are all grown up more.

This book took me just under an hour to read, and if it wasn't a school night, you can bet I would be picking up the next book! ( )

Maybe it's just the fact that I'm not an eleven-year-old girl, but I can't say I really enjoyed this Mandie book. It also may be that since I -didn't- grow up reading this particular Mandie book, there's no sentimental factor to add into my general impression. Sorry, Mandie. ( )
