Three inter-library loans later and I've finally gotten to read all of Charles de Lint's early short stories! Like the previous two volumes, most of the stories collected here could use some definite improvement, though careful readers can see the beginnings of de Lint's writing style emerge in the stories that blend modern settings with fantasy ideals. Three of the stories should at least be familiar (and enjoyed) by readers, since they were the beginnings of one of de Lint's early novels: Into the Green. Like the other early short stories they don't quite hold de Lint's signature magic yet, having far too much infleunce from typical fantasy tropes, but these light beginnings were what grew into his early high fantasy novels which grew in turn to the urban fantasy which we all known and love.
