I enjoyed reading the story of Barack Obama United States President by Roberta Edwards. The biography includes the most important details about Barack Obama and his life. The book includes information about his family, schooling, later education, career, and being elected as the President of The United States of America. I most enjoyed the logical flow of this book, which allows the reader to feel like they are walking through time with a glimpse of his life. For example, the story begins with a summary of what makes Barack Obama who he is. The given information include his height, name meaning, and personality characteristics. The next portion of the book begins to describe his birth, native country and his family life. The information is given in simple terms making it easy for the reader to understand. For example, the book describes that “Barack Sr. came from a tiny village in Kenya, a country on the east coast of Africa.” The book helps the reader by also providing a visual picture of the map of Africa and highlighting Kenya.
I enjoyed the illustrations and their ability to accurately connect with the text to create a visual for the reader. Each page includes a visual, some are illustrated and some are photographs. The visuals include maps, family photos, and illustrations of any pictures that were unlikely to exist. For example, the first illustration in the book is of baby Barack in the arms of his mother with his father beside her. This is a picture that may not exist, but the illustrator created it a close to the family’s likeness as possible. The illustrations present are drawn as photographs to maintain consistency throughout the story.
The central message in the story is that if you believe in something and work hard you can achieve. Barack Obama had constant odds against him, but he never stopped believing that he could help those less fortunate have better lives. ( )
