I remember this book being read to me in preschool story times. We would act out and verbalize the descriptive noise words such as “Squelch squerch!” when the family made their way through the squishy mud. The re-petitive yet adventurous nature of this book is very engaging. I enjoyed how in the end once they found the bear, the family trekked all the way home to hide under the covers and exclaim that they were never going on a bear hunt again. ( )

A family goes on a bear hunt. Yes, you heard it, a bear hunt! And that’s all they want to catch, a big one. Wow! They go through many obstacles, and they reach a cave. Guess what? They find a bear right there. So, did they catch it? And what did they do with it?

The book is an excellent read-aloud in a classroom. It will be super engaging. The illustrations are whimsical, making you want to keep turning the pages. We felt the book started off slowly, but we fell in love with the climax.
A sing-along treat for young children.

Going on a Bear Hunt is an exciting story to read to children who pretend to go on a bear hunt with actions and sounds. The family first packs up, starts walking, and then runs into (fun) roadblocks such as rivers or snowstorms while trying to find a bear. So children make sounds like swishy-swashy when walking through tall grass. ( )
