In accessible and lively prose, this book explains the ceremonies of the Catholic Mass and their meaning for lay people, including the young. It is designed to meet the widespread complaint that the Mass is boring, incomprehensible, or alienating. Fr. Randolph goes through the Mass step by step, looking at the origin and purpose of the various elements, and relating them to the reader's experience of prayer and the Christian life. Suggestions are made for ways to enhance our appreciation of the liturgy, how to prepare for Mass, and how to carry the grace of the Mass out into the world. A supplementary chapter looks at the use of Latin in the Mass, its past and present value, and explains it in the context of contemplative prayer.… (more)

I originally gave this book four stars, thinking of it as a very good and comprehensive book about the Mass for adults. But rereading it as my older grandchildren approach the age for Confirmation, it's so perfect for young adult religious education that I gave it another star. If we have to do Confirmation prep at home, this is going to be pure gold. Fr Randolph's straightforward, easily understood writing style is suitable for ages 12 or 13 and up; he covers each element of the Mass in just the right amount of detail. He has quirks and preferences (many of them are the same as mine, although I'd be greatly surprised if any part of our religious backgrounds or education was similar) and he discloses them, without condemning people who have different opinions. That's also a good thing for young people to know: Catholicism is catholic and has room for people to respectfully differ. I look forward happily to sharing this book with teenaged grandchildren.

It's still a good book for post-Confirmation adults too. He has interesting stuff to say about the history of the Mass, the structure of the Mass and the Lectionary, and how to prepare for Mass, comport yourself and cope with your fellow Christians, and so on. ( )
