The story begins high above Los Angeles, at the extravagant home and equally impressive wine cellar of entertainment lawyer Danny Roth. After inviting the "Los Angeles Times" to write an extensive profile extolling the liquid treasures of his collection, Roth finds himself the victim of a world-class wine heist. Enter Sam Levitt, former corporate, cultivated crime expert, and wine connoisseur, who follows his leads as he tracks down the source of a multimillion dollar wine heist--a trail that leads him to Bordeaux and its magnificent vineyards, and to Provence to meet an eccentric billionaire collector who might possibly have an interest in the stolen wines.… (more)

If you're looking for something quick and light, this is a fun read set mostly in restaurants or wine cellars in France. ( )

This is a hard one to give stars to. I found the reader to be a little stilted, but my husband liked his variety of voices. The story itself was amazingly devoid of action for a mystery. Nothing went wrong! I went looking for another copy when we had two minutes left assuming I had missed a disc, only to find it had ended without a very satisfactory conclusion. We enjoyed listening, but felt curiously unfulfilled when it ended. Good writing, though I find Bruno, Chief of Police and Inspector Brunetti are better at food description. They make my mouth water, not so much with this one. ( )

Mayle's book is probably of most interest to people who are really into fine French cooking and exotic French wines. Otherwise, as a mystery or "caper", it falls rather flat. ( )

rabck food bookbox; lite mystery. 3 million dollars of wine was stolen over the holidays from a billionaire's wine cellar. Or was it? Elena engages former crook, turned PI Sam Levitt to crack the case. Since it's a dead end in LA, Sam flies to Bordeaux and meets up with Sophie from the insurance company's French office to try to crack the case. ( )

Typical Peter Mayle. Every time I read one of Mayle's books I end up gaining weight because his descriptions of fine wine and French dishes stimulates my appetite. ( )
