1971 Twelve Against Empire: The Anti-Imperialists 1898-1900, by Robert L. Beisner (read 17 Jan 1986) This book studies twelve "anti-imperialists" in 1898-1900: Carl Schurz, William James, E. L. Godkin, Charles Eliot Norton, Edward Atkinson, Charles Francis Adams, George F. Hoar, Andrew Carnegie, Benjamin Harrison, George Boutwell, John Sherman, and Thomas B. Reed. I had thought the book would be sort of vignettes of these men, but it concentrates on what their position was as to anti-imperialism. Not a bad book, but its subject is not new to me, nor high on my list of current interests. ( )
