It's the first day of school and Arthur is in Mr. Ratburn's class. Instead of dismissing with the other classes, Mr. Ratburn dismisses his students in a single, file line. Arthur and and his friends all wish they were in another class with another teacher. They did not like Mr. Ratburn at all. Mr. Ratburn gave a Friday spelling test while other classes made popcorn and took trips to the aquarium. Mr. Ratburn registered Arthur for the spellathon because he made one of the highest grades on the spelling test. Not only that, Arthur won the spellathon. Mr. Ratburn was very pleased and so was Arthur. Mr. Ratburn announces that he will not be teaching third grade again. Instead, he will be teaching kindergarten. D.W. is not very happy about this. Mr. Ratburn will be her teacher next school year.
