Great book full with metaphors and deep meaningful sentences. The poems would fit more for students in higher elementary grades. Some poems have adult themes that may not be age appropriate for children. Some individual poems would fit great for specific lessons on various topics.

I love the Poetry for Young People series! This is a beautiful book filled with wonderful poems by Carl Sandberg and the art only enhances the wonderful poems. I especially like the poem "Buffalo Dusk" because I had just finished teaching my kids about Native Americans and I wish I could have read this poem to them. ( )

The gorgeous, soft, Hopper-esque (pastel I think?) illustrations illuminate so incredibly well the touching & sensitive poetry of Carl Sandburg. They manage to incorporate both Sandburg's sensitivity to life and his American pride. My favorites are 'The Fog' where he likens a cats creeping paws to the nearing mist, and 'Arithmetic' where he discusses the more practical questions about life and mathematics, as well as 'October Paint'. What a beautiful collection from a true master.

I love the fact that this book exists! Carl Sandburg is my favorite poet and having this book to share with my children is a joy. Not that I can't share his poetry with them anyway, but this makes it even easier. ( )
