In this first of four volumes, Bernard McGinn describes the very beginnings of mysticism in the New Testament period up to AD 500. He summarizes and expounds some very dense and difficult writings so that the reader can grasp the trends and themes that developed during this early period. The book is especially strong on revealing the influence of Neoplatonism on these early Christian authors. ( )
