While this book was really long, it had really good information and was sectioned out well. In the classroom you could use sections of it to teach with. There is also a glossary at the back of the book with scientific words and definitions along with an index so you can find information within the book easily.
The book was about mammoths, and focused on a baby mammoth that was found frozen and preserved. It discussed how scientists learn about animals that are extinct using there bones and making scientific guesses. ( )

Good book. Similar to books in the "Scientists in the Field" series, as it gives a lot of space to discussions of contemporary research (2010) on the animals. More enjoyable for me than some of those books, as it doesn't feel the need to give personal information about the researchers. As a child, I knew that wooly mammoths and mastodons were not the same, but this reminds me of the differences, which is nice. It uses a story line build around the conceit of filming an action packed documentary on the various beasts, which works quite well. There is no etymology of the names, which I would have liked. The illustrations are a mix of scenes from the past and photos of modern researchers at work, and are generally quite good. ( )

This book explores the discovery of a mammoth following with both the history of this creature and also explores the new information gathered from this new specimen. Since the author used real photo's from the digs this book comes to life with a realistic look into the life of the mastodon.
