As a kid, I loved this picture book about an elephant having to deal with a new kitten. It's obviously designed to help children cope with a new younger sibling. Despite its simplicity, it still packs an emotional punch and the final page is hilarious.
Penguin's Big Surprise is recommended for students second grade and under to help explain what it means to be an older sibling. Some of the vocabulary may need to be explained but with proper emphasis while being read. This book could also be used as life science opener on egg hatching. The book is structured from the perspective of how a mother would want a child to see a new born baby. Yes, the older sibling is going to want to play with the baby but they will have to be patient and wait show more for when the baby is old enough to play with like they want to play. Pugwug recognizes when the baby needs to be left alone, when it is okay to play, and when he needs to help out. show less
This is a cute story about a young elephant. The elephant goes to the doctor because he feels bad and wakes up to find two new tusks.
