A fast-paced, twisty psychological debut about the complexities of marriage and new motherhood, told through the frenetic lens of a wife seeking the truth about her husband, at all costs, as the validity of the life she once knew unravels page by page.

Liz Bennett knows that she is one of the lucky ones. Wealthy and charming, Arno is a supportive husband to Liz and a doting father to their daughter, Emma. A rising banker at a top firm in the Boston area, he is the picture of perfection, rounding off their idyllic New England life. But when Liz sees a text on Arno's phone with a kissy-face emoji, her anxiety kicks into overdrive and she begins to worry that her luck has run out.

Plagued by persistent skepticism and countless sleepless nights, Liz decides she must uncover the truth about her husband—as any wife would. So she takes a deep breath and dives down the rabbit hole. As Liz peels back layers of deceit and tracks down every lead, a frenzy begins to take over her life. Could Arno really be unfaithful? Or is Liz's imagination getting the best of her? When everyone around her is convinced she's become unhinged, she must prove, if only to herself, that a woman's intuition expands beyond a single cryptic text.

There was a time when the family Künstler lived in the fairy-tale city of Vienna. Circumstances transformed that fairy tale into a nightmare, and in 1939 the Künstlers found their way out of Vienna and into a new fairy tale: Los Angeles, California, United States of America.

For years Mamie Künstler, ninety-three-years-old, as clever and glamorous as ever, has lived happily in her bungalow in Venice, California with her inscrutable housekeeper and her gigantic St. Bernard dog. Their tranquility is upended when Mamie's grandson, Julian, arrives from New York City. Like many a twenty-something, he has come to seek his fortune in Hollywood. But it is 2020, the global pandemic sweeps in, and Julian's short visit suddenly has no end in sight.

Mamie was only eleven when the Künstlers escaped Vienna in 1939. They made their way, stunned and overwhelmed, to sunny, surreal Los Angeles where they joined a colony of distinguished Jewish musicians, writers and intellectuals also escaping Hitler. Now, faced with months of lockdown and a willing listener, Mamie begins to tell Julian the buried stories of her early years in Los Angeles: her escapades with eminent émigrés like Arnold Schoenberg, Christopher Isherwood, Thomas Mann. Oh, and Greta Garbo. While the pandemic cuts Julian off from the life he knows, Mamie's tales open up a world of lives that came before him. They reveal to him just how much the past holds of the future.

Cathleen Schine's captivating and comedic twelfth novel explores exile, émigrés, movie stars, musicians, family bonds and the power of stories—both those we hand down and the ones held secretly in the heart.

In the present day, Cleo Clemmons is hired by the grandson of American aristocratic family the Tremblays to help his matriarchal grandmother face her hoarding in the dilapidated Castle Moreau. But when Cleo uncovers more than just the woman's stashes of collectibles, a century-old mystery of disappearance, insanity, and the dust of the old castle's curse threatens to rise again, and this time, leave no one alive to tell its sordid tale.

"A deeply humane and genre-defying work of love and uncompromising hope."—Ocean Vuong

A boldly imagined debut novel about three Vietnamese siblings who seek refuge in the UK, expanding into a luminous meditation on ancestry and love

There are the goodbyes and then the fishing out of the bodies—everything in between is speculation.

After the last American troops leave Vietnam, siblings Anh, Thanh, and Minh begin a perilous journey to Hong Kong with the promise that their parents and younger siblings will soon follow. But when tragedy strikes, the three children are left orphaned, and sixteen-year-old Anh becomes the caretaker for her two younger brothers overnight.

In the years that follow, Anh and her brothers resettle in the UK and confront their new identities as refugees, first in overcrowded camps and resettlement centers and then, later, in a modernizing London plagued by social inequality and raging anti-immigrant sentiment. Anh works in a clothing factory to pay their bills. Minh loiters about with fellow unemployed high school dropouts. Thanh, the youngest, plays soccer with his British friends after class. As they mature, each sibling reckons with survivor's guilt, unmoored by their parents' absence. With every choice they make, their paths diverge further, until it's unclear if love alone can keep them together.

Told through lyrical narrative threads, historical research, voices from lost family, and notes by an unnamed narrator determined to chart their fate, Wandering Souls captures the lives of a family marked by war and loss yet relentless in the pursuit of a better future. With urgency and precision, it affirms that the most important stories are those we claim for ourselves, establishing Cecile Pin as a masterful new literary voice.

A family reunion gives way to an unforgettable genealogical quest as relatives reconnect across lines of color, culture, and time, putting the past into urgent conversation with the present.

In 1791, Thomas Jefferson hired a Black man to help survey Washington, DC. That man was Benjamin Banneker, an African American mathematician, a writer of almanacs, and one of the greatest astronomers of his generation. Banneker then wrote what would become a famous letter to Jefferson, imploring the new president to examine his hypocrisy, as someone who claimed to love liberty yet was an enslaver. More than two centuries later, Rachel Jamison Webster, an ostensibly white woman, learns that this groundbreaking Black forefather is also her distant relative.

Acting as a storyteller, Webster draws on oral history and conversations with her DNA cousins to imagine the lives of their shared ancestors across eleven generations, among them Banneker's grandparents, an interracial couple who broke the law to marry when America was still a conglomerate of colonies under British rule. These stories shed light on the legal construction of race and display the brilliance and resistance of early African Americans in the face of increasingly unjust laws, some of which are still in effect in the present day.

Discover nature’s most colourful creatures in a major new book on colour in the animal kingdom.

For many animals use of colour is essential to surviving in the wild. Both a built-in defence mechanism and a cunning tactic for attack, this biological advantage helps animals hide from dangerous predators and catch unsuspecting prey. It is used in many different ways, primarily to mask one’s identity, movement or location, and changes over time as animals evolve and adapt to live.

This stunning photographic collection reveals 100 creatures from around the world paired with fascinating insights from leading UK zoology author Steve Parker. Each animal will have a profile of 300 words paired with striking photographic examples featuring a wealth of colour and ingenious uses of colour for display or disguise.

Learn how:

  • The octopus can change its opacity, colour and pattern in response to threats.
  • The walking leaf insect has evolved a strikingly similar shape and colour to the leaves it eats.
  • The arctic fox changes its fur colour to white in the winter, perfectly blending in with the snow – but climate change is disrupting this age-old adaptation.

This study of some of the most innovative uses of colour by animals, packed with beautiful photography and fascinating insights, will delight all lovers of the natural world.

A visit to Leo's grandfather's farm turns upside down when his grandmother's bee hives are stolen. A light-hearted and funny middle-grade novel for fans of Rebecca Stead and Lynda Mullaly Hunt.

Eleven-year-old Leo is an "armchair adventurer." This, according to Dad, means he'd choose adventures in books or video games over real-life experiences. And while Leo hates the label, he can't argue with it. Unlike his little sister Lizzie, Leo is not a risk-taker.

So when he, Lizzie, Mom and Dad leave the city to visit Grandpa on Heron Island, Leo finds all kinds of dangers to avoid—from the deep, dark ocean to an old barn on the verge of collapse. But nothing on the island is more fearsome than Grandpa himself—Leo has never met anyone so grumpy! According to Mom, Grandpa is still grieving the recent death of his wife, a beekeeper beloved by everyone on the island.

Despite Leo's best efforts to avoid it, adventure finds him anyway when Grandma's beehives go missing in the dead of night. Infuriated, Grandpa vows to track down the sticky-fingered thieves himself...  with risk-averse Leo and danger-loving Lizzie (plus a kitten named Mayhem) in tow.

From John Cribb, author of the acclaimed novel Old Abe, comes a new work of historical fiction that brings Abraham Lincoln to life as never before.

The Rail Splitter tells the story of Abraham Lincoln's remarkable journey from a log cabin to the threshold of the White House—a journey that makes him one of America's most beloved heroes. We walk beside him on every page of this spellbinding novel and come to know his hopes and struggles on his winding path to greatness.

The story begins with Lincoln's youth on the frontier, where he grows up with an ax in one hand and book in the other, determined to make something of himself. He sets off on one adventure after another, from rafting down the Mississippi River to marching in an Indian war. When he is twenty-six, the girl he hopes to marry dies of fever. He spends days wandering the countryside in grief. A few years later, he purchases a ring inscribed with the words "Love Is Eternal" and enters a tempestuous marriage with Mary Todd.

Lincoln literally wrestles his way to prominence on the Illinois prairies. He teaches himself the law and enters the rough and tumble world of frontier politics. With Mary's encouragement, he wins a term in the US Congress, but his political career falters. They are both devastated by the loss of a child. As arguments over slavery sweep the country, Lincoln finds something worth fighting for, and his debates with brash rival Stephen Douglas catapult him toward the White House.

Part coming-of-age story, part adventure story, part love story, and part rags-to-riches story, The Rail Splitter is the making of Abraham Lincoln. The story of the rawboned youth who goes from a log cabin to the White House is, in many ways, the great American story. The Rail Splitter reminds us that the country Lincoln loved is a place of wide-open dreams where extraordinary journeys unfold.

Series: Polite Predators (2)

The second book in a hilarious illustrated non-fiction chapter book series starring a savvy and stylish cockroach who guides the reader through an encounter with a charming - and dangerous - predator. Is this hyena drooling for tea and crumpets... or for you?!

Celeste is a cockroach, and everyone knows that cockroaches are survivors, so who better to give advice on surviving an encounter with a polite predator? High teas are dainty meals with pretty teacups- you nibble tiny cakes, sip milky tea and chit-chat about not-so-important things like why doughnuts have holes and if fish have eyebrows. But Ruby the hyena is loud, ferocious and tends to slober. High-speed gobbling makes good sense in the wild, but it is a definite no-no in the tearoom! And Ruby just happens to be Queen of a very large clan of hungry hyenas. Will high tea be ruined by uninvited guests? Is Ruby peckish for something other than Celeste's famous cream buns?

Using her vast knowledge of hyenas, Celeste comes up with lots of strategies to get through high tea in one piece. Many of her suggestions are dangerous, most are absurd, but all are based on true hyena biology and hunting behaviour.

A stirring defense of Sinéad O'Connor's music and activism, and an indictment of the culture that cancelled her.

In 1990, Sinéad O'Connor's video for "Nothing Compares 2 U" turned her into a superstar. Two years later, an appearance on Saturday Night Live turned her into a scandal. For many people—including, for years, the author—what they knew of O'Connor stopped there. Allyson McCabe believes it's time to reassess our old judgments about Sinéad O'Connor and to expose the machinery that built her up and knocked her down.

Addressing triumph and struggle, sound and story, Why Sinéad O'Connor Matters argues that its subject has been repeatedly manipulated and misunderstood by a culture that is often hostile to women who speak their minds (in O'Connor's case, by shaving her head, championing rappers, and tearing up a picture of the pope on live television). McCabe details O'Connor's childhood abuse, her initial success, and the backlash against her radical politics without shying away from the difficult issues her career raises. She compares O'Connor to Madonna, another superstar who challenged the Catholic Church, and Prince, who wrote her biggest hit and allegedly assaulted her. A journalist herself, McCabe exposes how the media distorts not only how we see O'Connor but how we see ourselves, and she weighs the risks of telling a story that hits close to home.

In an era when popular understanding of mental health has improved and the public eagerly celebrates feminist struggles of the past, it can be easy to forget how O'Connor suffered for being herself. This is the book her admirers and defenders have been waiting for.

From the talented pen of bestselling author Leslie Gould comes a powerful and evocative dual-time story partly set during World War II.

Ivy Zimmerman is successfully navigating her life as a young Mennonite woman, one generation removed from her parents' Old Order Amish upbringing. But when her parents are killed in a tragic accident, Ivy's way of life is upended. As she deals with her grief, her sisters' needs, and her Dawdi and Mammi's strict rules, Ivy finds solace in both an upcoming trip to Germany for an international Mennonite youth gathering and in her great-aunt's story about Ivy's great-grandmother's visit to Germany in the late 1930s.

As Ivy grows suspicious that her parents' death wasn't, in fact, an accident, she gains courage from what she learns of her great-grandmother's time in World War II Germany. With her great-aunt's encouragement and the inspiration of her great-grandmother, Ivy seeks justice for her parents, her sisters, and herself.

"Sacrifices must be made; battles will be lost. It is always this way in a quest for change."

In the near future, Earth's oil reserves are depleted. Nations grapple to find an alternative energy source. Terrorists race for control over world resources. And the Syndicate--a conglomerate of allied intelligence agencies--struggles to maintain peace.

Syndicate operative Juliet Arroway and her best friend, Mariam, a progressive Saudi princess, are tasked with hunting down terrorists and putting an end to the global energy war, the same mission that cost Juliet's father his life. But when multiple terrorist attacks result in devastating losses, including the death of Juliet's longtime boyfriend, and the Syndicate begins to suspect that Mariam's family is somehow involved, Juliet must rise above her heartbreak to discover the truth.

In her quest, Juliet is paired with Graham—a dashing yet arrogant FBI agent—and embarks on a dangerous journey toward love and survival as they race to obtain the formula that could solve the energy crisis. But when peace demands a stunning betrayal, Juliet must decide how much she is willing to pay for the success of her mission. Brilliantly weaving fact and fiction, Butler tells a story seldom told—how female heroics can change the course of war.

Veteran motion picture, television, and Broadway producer Julian Schlossberg grew up in New York City with an early love of entertainment. As a child, he was an avid fan of radio, film, and the new art of television, and harbored ambitions of meeting his favorite stars one day. Little did he know that in the course of his career, he would not only meet many of them, but also become their producer, representative, and friend.

During his nearly 60 years in show business, Schlossberg has worked as a producer, director, distributor, exhibitor, radio and television host, and record executive. At 27 he was the youngest head film buyer of a national theater chain; after working at the ABC network, the Walter Reade Organization, and Paramount Pictures, he would start his own motion-picture company, Castle Hill Productions, which would become one of the largest independent film-distribution companies in the world with a library of over 500 films. Not willing to restrict his efforts to film and television, he has also produced award-winning plays and musicals for Broadway and off-Broadway, working closely with brilliant writers and directors like Mike Nichols, Larry Gelbart, Susan Stroman, Woody Allen, and David Mamet.

Now, in his memoir Try Not to Hold It Against Me, Schlossberg shares stories from a lifetime in entertainment, from his childhood in the Bronx to his years as a producer for screen and stage. Schlossberg takes us through the trials and triumphs of work and play in every avenue of the business: negotiating with Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, and Lillian Hellman; hosting the syndicated radio and television production Movie Talk, which introduced him to hundreds of stars; experiencing the paranormal with Shirley MacLaine and Betty Hill; running the Orson Welles estate and restoring Welles' masterly film adaptation of Othello; partying with Barbra Streisand and Liza Minelli; testifying in a lawsuit against The Beatles; and interviewing over 120 of the most influential figures of the 20th century for his series Witnesses to the 20th Century.

Written with engaging humor and self-deprecation—and with a foreword by Academy Award winner Elaine May—Try Not to Hold It Against Me gives readers a behind-the-scenes pass to Cannes and Las Vegas, the lives and homes of the stars, and the rarely seen but crucial work of the producer in the midst of it all. It's a compelling read for film, television, and theater enthusiasts alike—and a one-of-a-kind autobiography by one of entertainment's true insiders.

Series: Loveletting (1)

A young woman who learns to become strong in the face of impossible circumstances, and a man who finds light in the midst of overwhelming darkness. Prepare yourself for the first book in a haunting new series... Loveletting.

Fleeing from her home after escaping the murder of her mother, inexperienced and petrified by reality with her horse as her only companion - Charlotte is met by the most notorious serial killer of the nation. His dark past and her dark future collide, in a world filled with dangers far greater than him.

Set in the rugged Victorian west at the end of the 19th century with a myriad of complex characters, all intertwined in a brutal environment that examines the conflicting nature and morality of humanity. Charlotte may be innocent at heart, but the world she lives in is not. Filled with dangers from gangs to cults and a mysterious horror element that persists throughout - the overarching gothic love story fills this thrilling, dark adventure up until the haunting end... leaving the reader with an existential dread so deep that it must be read to be understood, yet craving for more.

This novel is definitely for an adult audience, as the content is very heavy and challenging. It will appeal to those interested in a gothic romance with undertones of psychological horror. Most importantly, this book is a form of literary fiction; as character development is the most crucial factor in telling this story and it does NOT follow the typical tropes of a genre book. Subtle hints to the dark machinations behind the scenes, and interweaving characters who gradually change and grow over time, all work together to create a living world - filled with the unexpected - in which to lose yourself within.

If you want something to read on autopilot, and wish for the plot to follow a certain expected pattern, this is NOT the book for you. This experience will challenge you; a gripping story that will invade you, heart and mind, long after reading.

How Tammy Wynette channeled the conflicts of her life into her music and performance.

With hits such as "Stand By Your Man" and "Golden Ring," Tammy Wynette was an icon of American domesticity and femininity. But there were other sides to the first lady of country. Steacy Easton places the complications of Wynette's music and her biography in sharp-edged relief, exploring how she made her sometimes-tumultuous life into her work, a transformation that was itself art.

Wynette created a persona of high femininity to match the themes she sang about--fawning devotion, redemption in heterosexual romance, the heartbreak of loneliness. Behind the scenes, her life was marked by persistent class anxieties; despite wealth and fame, she kept her beautician's license. Easton argues that the struggle to meet expectations of southernness, womanhood, and southern womanhood, finds subtle expression in Wynette's performance of "Apartment #9"--and it's because of these vocal subtleties that it came to be called the saddest song ever written. Wynette similarly took on elements of camp and political critique in her artistry, demonstrating an under-appreciated genius.

Why Tammy Wynette Matters reveals a musician who doubled back on herself, her façade of earnestness cracked by a melodrama that weaponized femininity and upended feminist expectations, while scoring twenty number-one hits.

Few horrific acts are black and white, and no soul is the villain in their own mind.

Hades, Master of Judgement, has served King Lucifer for over five millennia. Reigning over Hell’s courthouse and passing judgement on the vilest souls humanity has to offer, Hades is unmoved by the pleas or tears of the condemned. Ruthless, but neither cruel nor heartless, Hades prides himself on his fair, though often harsh, verdicts. Until the day he locks horns with Naessia, King Lucifer’s Master of Unity.

Driven by her strong desire to create a system of justice and harmony, Naessia has called into question the logic behind Hades’ verdicts. While the Master of Judgement is more than happy to debate, her accusations have crossed from debates into insults, and the powerful Olympian is not one to suffer insults.

To broker peace between his two Masters, King Lucifer has ordered a trial run of Naessia’s proposed initiative. For the first time in Hell’s infinite history, victims will be allowed to witness the Trials of those who victimized them. Using a variety of different Trials to create a fair sampling, Naessia’s initiative is set for success…until Hades’ verdicts cause their feuds to escalate. Finding common ground is vital for the stability of Hell, but with each case, the odds are becoming less and less likely.

Set in the world of The Devil’s Trill, Hades draws the reader deep into Lucifer’s kingdom for an exploration into the minds of the wicked.

As hundreds of thousands of displaced people sought refuge in Europe, the global relief system failed. This is the story of the volunteers who stepped forward to help.

In 2015, increasing numbers of refugees and migrants, most of them fleeing war-torn homelands, arrived by boat on the shores of Greece, setting off the greatest human displacement in Europe since WWII. As journalists reported horrific mass drownings, an ill-prepared and seemingly indifferent world looked on. Those who reached Europe needed food, clothing, medicine, and shelter, but the international aid system broke down completely.

All Else Failed is Dana Sachs’s compelling eyewitness account of the successes—and failures—of the volunteer relief network that emerged to meet the enormous need. Closely following the odysseys of seven individual men and women, and their families, it tells a story of despair and resilience, revealing the humanity within an immense humanitarian disaster.

“An urgent, deeply researched, and tender account of the helpers: refugee crisis volunteers (often formerly displaced) who arrive when those responsible for the chaos have turned their backs. Vital, and often infuriating, it is at once global in scale and absolutely singular. This is a story about the drive to nurture and care for our fellow humans, one that stirs us all.” —Dina Nayeri, author of The Ungrateful Refugee

“Sachs chronicles what happened in Greece when Middle Eastern refugees and volunteers from around the world converged, imperfectly, often chaotically, but with empathy and generosity in ways that mattered and ways that moved me. Sometimes these impromptu communities fail in the end, but the fact that they succeeded for a time, against the odds, can teach us important lessons.” —Rebecca Solnit, author of Hope in the Dark and Orwell’s Roses

“This people-first, intensely researched, deeply personal, and altogether devastating call to action tells us that when all else fails, volunteer.” —Booklist

How does self-realization impact leadership through every layer of society? How does this process transform social issues, workplace culture, and relationships?

Through a series of riveting stories, You Are Us presents an exploration of individual and collective socio-cultural transformation discovering what happens when leaders are actively doing inner work as a source to ignite change throughout culture, workforces, organizations, politics, and our social fabric.

The delicate balance between inner change and outer societal reflection is revealed through real stories of adaptive leaders. The 13 stories in You Are Us are from the perspective of 13 people who are radically different from each other, but are also unified by having done the work of inner reckoning with their trauma, pain, and socialized identity. In turn, this work reveals that a pathway to sourcing and initiating societal change from within is a vital step to help one integrate into a collective reconciliation process across race, gender, religion, politics, and other areas where cultural tensions emerge.

Through the vulnerable illumination of each story, we learn how inner work translates into liberated leadership that serves community, workplace, and ultimately societal transformation.

We the readers are also invited into a self-inquiry process, as an opportunity to illuminate our own unconscious patterns in the contexts of societal identities, and to catalyze our generative leadership potential in an increasingly polarized world.

"This is the story of how wine brought me back from the dead."

Thus begins Adam McHugh’s transition through the ending of one career―as a hospice chaplain and grief counselor―into the discovery of a new life in wine among the grapevines of the Santa Ynez Valley of California.

“This is the corkscrewing tale of how I got to Santa Ynez, eventually, and the questions that came up along the way,” he continues. “You and I are going to take a long wine tour together on our way there, and we will make plenty of stops for a glass and some local wine history. As you will see, I reached into the old, old story of wine in order to find my new story, which begins, as so many wine love stories do, in the French countryside. Most stories about religion and drink are stories of recovery. I’m not sure if mine isn’t a story about recovery too.”

Adam’s story is one of being forced to reevaluate and remake his life when things fell apart. But more than that, it’s a story about finding healing through the good gifts of wine, friends, and the beauty of wine country.

Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, author Jonathan Marshall spent his young life in a high crime neighborhood where making poor choices were a form of survival. Growing up on the streets and the effects of a dysfunctional school system led to a turbulent life that included imprisonment, homelessness, assault, and frequent interactions with law enforcement.

Finding redemption later in life and in recovery from toxic family relationships, Marshall wrote his memoir to tell the true stories about living in the ghetto.

His is the real voice of a violent upbringing on the rough streets of Baltimore City in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, as well as the remarkable strength it took to be able to turn things around and build a better life after violence. Readers will find his story honest, raw, and genuinely insightful.

Five women rose in the dark of a Sunday morning on Nisan 18, AD 30. They had agreed to meet together in the most densely populated city in the Roman Empire to perform a necessary but cheerless and gruesome task.

Two of them were relatives of the deceased man; each of the other three had been healed by his touch. Their mission was critical. In the rush to entomb their Rabbi by nightfall three and a half days earlier, a crucial step had been omitted—that of applying oils to his burial shroud.

The women had prepared the oils as soon as possible and carried them in small alabastra, but they had been excessively delayed. Not one but two intervening Sabbaths had postponed their graveside visit until that particular morning.

They knew the stench inside the cave-like tomb would be unbearable, but their love compelled them to honor the man they grieved so deeply.

They didn’t know that Roman soldiers had been posted to guard the doubly sealed tomb.

They didn’t know that the stone over the tomb entrance weighed about three-quarters of a ton.

But then the sun broke.

This is their story—and his.

-----------------------------------------------

Dawn is actually two books in one.

Part One (the first half of the book) is dramatized history. It reads as a multi-layered story, with dialogue and historical details to highlight the emotions and movements of the characters involved.  It transports you, the reader, back into Palestine some 2,000 years ago to experience the dynamics of those emotionally charged days.

The second half of the book provides the background research for the story. This half of the book consists of Part Two, which is a complete integration of the four gospel accounts with extensive footnotes, and Part Three, which addresses questions about the chronology, writers, characters, and relationships. Particular focus is given to the women, especially Mary Magdalene.

One name springs to mind when we think of classic suspense films: Alfred Hitchcock.

His silhouette is instantly recognisable as no one else has quite the same pouty lips and round, chubby face. The way he posed for photographs and his penchant for making cameo appearances in his films bear witness to his larger-than-life personality, but it was his ability to tell a spellbinding tale coupled with his technical brilliance that earned him the epithet of "Master of Suspense". His groundbreaking use of camera movement and the way he framed shots to maximise anxiety and fear place films like "Vertigo" among the very finest examples of creative achievement ever produced within the seventh art. In "Rear Window", he builds edge-of-your-seat tension by placing us in James Stewart's wheelchair and making us watch events unroll through his eyes, and the use of cutting-edge special effects in "The Birds" is almost as impressive as the fact that more than three thousand birds were trained for the film. What else do these three films mentioned have in common, along with "Psycho" and "Rebecca" and so many others? That's right...they were based on novels or short stories; the written word.

In A Hint of Hitchcock, we turn our attention back from the screen to the page, and bring you, the avid suspense reader, modern tales that chill and surprise, all inspired by the work of the master of suspense.

Four women from Haiti, St. Thomas, and Guam meet at a college counseling session for first-year students and learn they have a shared history of abuse. Dubbing themselves the "island sisters," their unyielding friendship is their touchstone across oceans, through labyrinths of forced marriages and violent men, motherhood, and their dreams of freedom.

Strong-willed and hot-headed Monique, quiet and romantic Cecilia, devout Lanei, and determined Ella are four friends who seem to makeup for what the other lacks. Guide to Norse Paganism

A Comprehensive Guide to Explore Viking History and Culture, Myths and Legends of the Gods & Goddess, Creation of the Universe, Runes, Rituals, Symbols, and Divination.

Emma Karlsson

Explore the roots of Viking culture and traditions as you embark on a Norse mythology, mysticism, and magic journey.

How did the universe come into being?

Was it a creation of a God that shaped the cosmos in a matter of days?

Or was it the slaying of a giant at the hands of three brothers that gave rise to everything we know?

That last question might seem odd, but it forms the very foundation of one of the richest and most fascinating religions that flourished in Europe during the Early Middle Ages.

Very different from monotheistic religions and prominent in the Scandinavian regions, Norse Paganism was a collection of customs, beliefs, and sagas that defined the Viking way of life - full of magic, mysticism, and an ever-expanding mythos.

Today, however, you'd recognize the elements of Norse Paganism populating the fabric of pop culture - in historical TV shows, superhero movies, video games, and even novels - retelling the sagas of gods such as Odin, Thor, Loki, and more.

But Norse Paganism packs more within its intricate layers of stories and cultural practices - it is a melting pot of high values, interwoven with nature and a true sense of freedom.

Sounds interesting?

If you want to explore this fascinating pantheon and perhaps become a Norse Pagan yourself, you're at the right place.

In this beginner-friendly guide to understanding the Norse faith, you will discover:

  • A detailed guide to what it takes to be a Norse Paganist - explore the world of Norse traditions, beliefs, mystical practices, and more
  • A brief history and the origin of the Nordic Pagan practices - unravel the rise and fall of the Viking people as you trace their history and explore their unusual traditions
  • A thrilling dive into Norse cosmology - follow in the footsteps of Odin and see how the universe, the nine realms, and the world tree came into being
  • Norse Sagas at your fingertips - travel with Thor, revel in the beauty of Freya, and play tricks with Loki as you explore a plethora of fascinating gods and goddesses
  • Elves, dwarves, trolls, giants, and many magical creatures and monsters in a comprehensive Norse bestiary
  • Runic Magic 101 - uncover the magic and mysticism of ancient runic symbols
  • The cycle of birth and death and how it shaped the Viking culture
  • How to practice your beliefs while living in modern times - discover a complete framework to becoming a Norse Pagan

And much more.

All this is just the tip of the iceberg. Within the Norse traditions, you'll find a more profound and meaningful way to live your life.

Its refreshing and liberating ways allow you to unlock your spiritual, physical, material, and emotional potential.

An Akan proverb says, "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten." This belief underlies historian Amy Tanner Thiriot's work in Slavery in Zion. The total number of those enslaved during Utah's past has remained an open question for many years. Due to the nature of nineteenth-century records, particularly those about enslaved peoples, an exact number will never be known, but while writing this book, Thiriot documented around one hundred enslaved or indentured Black men, women, and children in Utah Territory.

Using a combination of genealogical and historical research, the book brings to light events and relationships misunderstood for well over a century. Section One provides an introductory history, chapters on southern and western experiences, and information on life after emancipation. Section Two is a biographical encyclopedia with names, relationships, and experiences. Although this book contains material applicable to legal history and the history of race and Mormonism, its most important goal is to be a treasury of the experiences of Utah's enslaved Black people so their stories can become an integral part of the history of Utah and the American West, no longer forgotten or written out of history.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

Elinor Grant has always wanted a man to fall in love with her, but her plain face has already made her into a spinster at the ripe old age of twenty-eight. When her father’s finances suddenly evaporate, he leaves her without a roof over her head and no other option but to take a position as a governess at the grand estate, Carlisle Hall. There she meets the handsome, reclusive, and scarred Captain Hewlett, son and heir of a wealthy baronet and blinded at sea during the Napoleonic Wars.

Captain Valentine Hewlett has left the social world behind ever since he survived an attack on his ship that left his entire crew dead and himself permanently blind. He has no intention of ever marrying—the ladies of his station are too comfortable and vain for his temperament. But when he meets Elinor Grant, he feels he has finally found a kindred spirit with a true heart of compassion earned from a history of personal anguish.

Impossible to avoid is Vincent, Captain Hewlett’s identical twin brother—his opposite in every way, except his handsome face. For some mysterious reason, he is dead set on scaring Elinor away from Carlisle Hall. Elinor must weather the abuses of this selfish, vain man and discover his true motives before he succeeds in driving her away from the only man she’s ever known who cares more about inner beauty than a pretty face.

A Series of Unfortunate Proposals is a clean historical romance set during the Regency era, approximately 70,000 words in length. Catherine Keaton's books always end in a happily-ever-after!

An Introduction to Complexity Pedagogy: Using Critical Theory, Critical Pedagogy and Complexity in Performance and Literatureoffers readers an introduction to the basic concepts of complexity science and how they might be applied in the teaching of composition, creative writing, performance, and literature.

The book builds on Critical Theory (defined as Frankfurt Theory) and border theory, serving as a critique of neoliberalism in higher education and the teaching of critical thinking as a set of skills. Individual chapters are devoted to the following artists and writers:

* the Choctaw people
* author LeAnne Howe
* Chicana lesbian author Gloria Anzaldua
* performance artist Karen Finley
* the performance duo Bob Flanagan and Sheree Rose

The strength of this book is that it concentrates on the teaching of interrelated topics: borders (including the border between the able/disabled), complexity, mixed ancestry, ability/disability, texts, and performance, using the Mexico-U.S. border as the working example of a complexity system.

The work of the five aforementioned artists and authors are used to focus on political resistance within the context of decolonialism, but there are also references to mixed ancestry populations (including Redbones) and disability issues.

This complexity frame of reference allows the reader to see and understand both the artists' narratives and viewpoints in the dynamic relations of shorter and longer time frames. No prior knowledge of complexity science is required and ample examples of complexity-related topics-- from coral reefs to zebra stripes--are provided. The focus is on students in state universities and community college transfer students, especially first generation students and students of color, with policy implications pointing to a critique of both elite small liberal arts colleges (SLACs) and research institutions.

An Introduction to Complexity Pedagogy: Using Critical Theory, Critical Pedagogy and Complexity in Performance and Literatureis the perfect text for assignment in a variety of classrooms, including courses in Complexity Science, Composition and Rhetoric, Performance Arts, Cultural Studies, Critical Theory, Ethnic Studies, and many others.

Perfect for courses such as: Introduction to Creative Writing | Advanced Composition | Introduction to Border Art | Introduction to Complexity in the Arts and the Humanities | Introduction to Multicultural Literature | Introduction to Chicanx and Native American Literature | Introduction to Performance Art and Social Justice | Special Topics: Complexity, the Environment, Literature and the Arts | Special Topics: Disability Studies and Performance | Special Topics: Critical Family Histories, Mixed Ancestry and Pedagogy

Stories in this erotica collection are meditations on love and sexual desire. They can be silly, sad, sensuous, sinful. One review described them as "exquisite, thoughtful vignettes that individually by turns inspire reflection, evoke startled recognition and collectively offer considerable insight into the tragicomedy that is the constant human search for connection."

While the goal of these couple-friendly stories is both "titillation and reflection," they should appeal to fans of Scheherezade, the fiction of Milan Kundera, Philip Roth, Mary Gaitskill, John Updike, Susan Minot, Alberto Moravia and Candace Bushnell.

A bass player navigates his way through the muddy waters of Chicago’s music scene

Bill Harrison chronicles his journey from bumbling music student to successful professional bass player in late twentieth-century Chicago. Told with a mixture of wry humor and hard-won insight, Making the Low Notes gives readers an insider's peek into the prosaic life of a working musician. Harrison describes periods of camaraderie, disappointment, pain, and joy as he toils in venues as divergent as bowling alleys, jazz clubs, recording studios, hotels, orchestra pits, and concert halls. He shares the stage with jazz greats, including Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Clark Terry, Bunky Green, and Max Roach. Along the way, the bassist struggles to reconcile the dissonance between his desire to be heard and his impulse to hide silently in the shadows.

Fear is a double-edged weapon.

When a Shadow spreads over the utopian Colony, the only human enclave in a lonely planet, the young will be the first to understand the danger that hovers above them. What they find about themselves in that struggle will lead them to greatness... or to the destruction of their idyllic way of living.

Who will rise a hero, and who will become a monster?

In the tradition of Ursula LeGuin and Isaac Asimov, this is the story of a people that do not know fear... and what happens when they discover it. Of what is left when paranoia becomes all-encompassing, and men find the evil within each of them.

The mother of two boys herself, she is driven to help as her mind goes into overdrive imagining it were one of her own sons. Series: Paige Hanson (1)

What would you do if you woke up to the question "Where is your husband?"

As you lay in a hospital bed, unsure of how you got there, would panic or denial hold you in that moment? And what if the people asking you that question repeatedly were Government Agents who should have no interest in your missing spouse?

All of this is faced by Paige Hanson when she wakes up in hospital after an accident she can't remember. Her husband Leo hasn't been seen since the night before and try as she might, she can't remember their last conversation.

Having had a photographic memory since early childhood, Paige now finds her memories hazy, unpredictable and confusing, and yet is willing to do whatever it takes to find Leo and bring him home - even if that means turning to the one person she swore never to rely on. All she has to go on is her gut instincts and the last two words that Leo secretly left behind.

But as Paige comes to terms with what is happening around her, she is suspicious of those interested in Leo and his disappearance.

In order to protect Leo, Paige is determined to uncover the truth and find out why this message had to be hidden. But once she starts on this murky road, is it too late to turn back or will it change the course of her life forever?

Tess has a mission from the Queen: sail across the oceans to the bottom of the world and prevent a war. Unbeknownst to the Queen, Tess also intends to find the last World Serpent—a once-mythical creature with the magical ability to heal her best friend Pathka from a life-threatening injury. Tess never was one to follow the rules and this self-assigned mission feels like her duty, her calling, her destiny.

Destiny has other ideas.

When someone from Tess's past makes a surprise return, old wounds are cracked open, throwing her mission—and both the Queen's and Tess's personal agendas—into complete disarray. What's more, Tess's personal pain is intertwined with a history greater than her own and the mending of it threatens the delicate balance of the entire Southlands. A Hundred VeilsQuick Look
Digital audiobook

Prize-winning novel A Hundred Veils is now available as an audiobook read by the author.

A young American professor at the University of Tehran falls in love with an Iranian artist and is thwarted by social, political, and religious forces that seem beyond his control. Set in the time of the Shah, this is a heart-warming picture of the Iranian people who befriend, guide, love, and laugh at the naïve foreigner who wants more than anything to fit in.

The Islamic revolution in Iran did not arise out of thin air. For years, the country had seethed with repressed resentment of the Shah's heavy-handed, authoritarian policies. Illegal societies operated underground, some tracing back to the beginning of the Shah's reign. Nationalists, socialists, Marxists, and Islamic leftists and reformers—all with somewhat different agendas—juggled for influence and support. The universities, mosques, and tea houses were filled with discussions that ranged from the theoretical to the seditious. This novel presents a heart-warming picture of the Iranian people who befriend, guide, love, and laugh at Marco, a young American teaching at the University of Tehran when forces opposing the Shah were gathering strength. Marco naively assumes at first that U.S. help is wanted and appreciated by the Iranians, but soon he comes to see himself—in the eyes of some—as an instrument of the West's arrogant assertion of control. And then he falls in love.

Series: Tale of Tales (1)

Tale of Tales is a high/epic fantasy saga based on the motifs of ancient myths, legends, and forgotten fairytales.

Senka is no hero, but you never know what is coming for you. And if that burns down your house and family, while you are left blinded by your house’s guardian snake, the outlook becomes grim. So Senka clings to her dog’s back to survive, unaware of the fateful prophecy and the great changes to come. But when a wandering warrior becomes her protector and mysterious strangers join their hounded party through a series of seemingly chance encounters, they all begin to discover that all is not as it seems.

What is pursuing her? And why? Can the strange characters gathering around her on her desperate quest save her from doom? Are they mere puppets of a young, beguiling witch guided by her own hidden motives, or are forgotten shadows rising again from the immeasurable depths of time?

A tale of folk fairytales and myths, of swords and sorcery and mythical beings – a unique story of dark times and unsung heroes who may light your way.

Book One, A Strange Bunch, is the first part of Nikola Stefan’s epic adventure Tale of Tales series. The book series features leading characters of various ages and, although written with adult and young adult audiences in mind, it is, in the tradition of the greatest fantasy epics, suitable for all ages.

Humans and elves, dwarves and gnomes, wizards and warriors all live and do business in the thriving, overcrowded port city of Cliff's End, to say nothing of the tourists and travelers who arrive by land and sea, passing through the metropolis on matters of business or pleasure—or on quests. The hard-working, under-appreciated officers of the Cliff's End Castle Guard work day and night to maintain law and order as best they can.

A fire in the neighboring city-state of Barlin has resulted in hundreds of refugees pouring into Cliff's End, forcing the creation of a new neighborhood—Albinton, which everyone calls “New Barlin”—and a new police precinct—Phoenix Precinct. Violence against the refugees is on the rise. Lieutenants Danthres Tresyllione and Torin ban Wyvald are called to the latest act of brutality, which has resulted in a vicious murder. But what appears to be a simple hate crime turns out to be far more complicated, as Danthres and Torin's investigation leads them to corruption in the Castle Guard—and in the castle itself!

Officially, 17-year-old Anya is dead. Unofficially, she's in New Orleans with minimal recollection of the night her mobster parents were murdered and even less recollection of how she ended up in the hands of a shady nightclub owner.

After weeks of failed attempts, Anya escapes with help from the son of the city’s most notorious crime boss. Using his father and his connections to produce official documents, Anya proves she is who she says, despite the death certificate, and begins to teeter the lines between avenging her parents and earning the trust of the crime family protecting her.

When Anya’s uncle quietly resurfaces, he deems her more useful dead and refuses to entertain her desire to piece together what’s left of their family. He threatens to destroy her relationships with the members and heirs of the crime family unless she becomes his personal assassin and spy.

Refusing to be a pawn, Anya forges her own path into the bloody criminal underworld to secure what’s left of her family’s empire before her uncle kills her—or before she kills him—all while navigating a blooming romance with the boss’s desperate-for-peace son, avoiding the detective that has his sights set on the family, and racing to ensure she’s exacted her revenge on those responsible for her parents deaths once it’s revealed to the world that her casket is empty.

A tale of adventure, betrayal, espionage & onions...

The idea of space excites me.

Yet, as history tells us, has always been difficult for humans to reach. Myself included.

So why not experience that adventure by talking my way onto a pirate crew…

… And trying to abduct its notorious captain?

Little did I know who I was dealing with.

My name is Simon Fox and I’m fresh out of flunking freighter school. Don’t tell anyone that by the way because I lied on my resume.

No one does that, right?

The pirate ship in question is called the Unbound. It’s that piece of scrap metal on the cover and it goes from zero to sarcasm faster than mag travel. The crew are smelly, crazy and annoying. I also hope they can’t read.

Anyway, you might be wondering why a space flunky is attempting this crazy mission.

I have a good reason, and it starts with a master plan and an entry hatch…

Unbound is a fun and light read, with lots of intrigue and space shenanigans.

Sometimes the situation just calls for a few psychopaths. But what do you do in the twenty-eighth century when you desperately need psychopaths, but you've long since identified a cure for the condition and totally eradicated it? Fortunately, you have time travel. When there are no psychopaths available and you need some, you just go back in time to medically manufacture them (so to speak) so they'll be grown, trained, and ready to report for work today.

In the year AD 2754 there are no more history books. Instead, twenty-eighth century Historians travel back in time to attend significant historical events, where they telepathically interview the witnesses, participants, and victims. They create reports from their telepathic interviews, describe witnesses' reactions, thoughts and feelings about whatever transpires, and describe the consequences of those events on their lives. Then, they upload their reports to the Educator Database, from which twenty-eighth century history teachers create their course curriculum.

One Historian unthinkingly-and illegally-speaks to two "locals" in the year AD 2021, triggering catastrophic events that change the course of history. Twenty-eighth century world leaders must gather up an emergency team to repair this "Anomaly" and return the time continuum and recorded history to its original state. Their emergency team includes one regular Historian, a local twenty-first century psychologist, and four psychopaths, called "Heroes."

Because this is one of those situations that just calls for a few psychopaths.

Series: Sylvania (3)

She escaped his net, but now he's caught her heart.

Muri was resigned to being the tenth bride of the king of the merfolk-until he disappeared on land. Now she has mere days to find him among the treacherous fairies and dim-witted humans before the throne is forfeit and his menacing rival takes control of the merkingdom.

Her first shimmering glimpse of a human in a boat is so captivating, his fishing net almost ensnares her. But once on shore, she discovers that the fairies are kind, and the humans intelligent. And the man who almost caught her-a fish-catcher named Jack-is utterly handsome.

Muri needs to warn the mermaids that the merking won't be returning-he's lying drunk in the village park, unable to shift to merman form. But she hesitates to leave the village. Muri wants to learn more of this place where humans and fairies help each other, women and men are equals, and rulers are chosen by everyone. And she wants to spend more time with Jack.

But the merking's rival is coming for her. He'll threaten the whole village to force her to return home. To keep Jack safe, she'll have to leave him.

The Ocean Girl is a cozy fantasy romance in a fairy tale setting with lighthearted magic. It's the beach read Éowyn packs when she goes on vacation. The Ocean Girl contains love scenes.

The Ripper: The First Next Life PrequelQuick Look
Digital audiobook
Series: Next Life (2)

John Pepo, an Irishman who emigrated with his family into England, lived an ordinary life with ordinary dreams; but then, everything changed. Shortly before the tragic death of his family, John began having other dreams. He dreamed of a young man covered in lightning, a girl with tattoos, and of a man marked with VI from another world. However, what John dreamed about most of all was of fire, and of laughter.

After being summoned to London, John finds himself in Whitechapel. There, in the impoverished district known for its whores and beggars, he's met by a strange being in a dark alley who declares himself to be Jack the Ripper. Jack tells him he's been watching him; that he's been waiting for this day, a day foretold by the gods so that together they can fix a great aberration blighting the city.

Thus begins the riveting quest of the infamous Jack the Ripper and his most beloved friend John. As the devilish Jack haunts the streets like a spectre while mutilating his victims, the tales of those they damned and those they saved come to light. This is a story of loss, demons, witches, and the torment of one man by the puppeteering hands of a very stingy individual named Old Nick.

If You Consider Time the Most Precious Asset in Your Life and Therefore Want to Read the Essentials of a Book Presented in a Clear and Concise Summary Without Missing Any Highlights of the Original Book, Then Read On…

Note to readers: This is a summary of Sally Norton’s book “Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick and How to Get Better” and not the original book designed to enhance your reading experience!

About This Summary!

If you’re eating a healthy diet and you’re still dealing with fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, recurrent injuries, or chronic pain, the problem could be your spinach, almonds, sweet potatoes, and other trusted plant foods. And your key to vibrant health may be quitting these so-called superfoods.

After suffering for decades from chronic health problems, nutrition educator Sally K. Norton, MPH, discovered that the culprits were the chemical toxins called oxalates lurking within her “healthy,” organic plant-heavy diet.

She shines a light on how our modern diets are overloaded with oxalates and offers fresh solutions including:

• A complete, research-backed program to safely reverse your oxalate load

• Comprehensive charts and resources on foods to avoid and better alternatives

• Guidance to improve your energy, optimize mood and brain performance, and find true relief from chronic pain

Norton reveals that the popular dictum to “eat more plants” in this groundbreaking guide can be misleading. Toxic Superfoods gives health-seekers a chance for improved energy, optimum brain performance, graceful aging, and true relief from chronic pain.

Why You Should Choose Book Summary Publishing!

Book Summary Publishing offers an in-depth look into the book by Sally Norton “Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick and How to Get Better”. This summary book breaks down all the key points, takeaways, and facts in “Toxic Superfoods” so that the reader gets an overview quickly of the most relevant insights of the original book.

This way, you will learn the key points, takeaways, and lessons to enhance your knowledge and start discussions without missing any highlights of the original book – PROMISED!

Series: Carole Walsh (1)

"She stared at the bead in the palm of her hand. Just a plain wooden bead, light brown with flecks of darker brown showing. Just a simple bead. A simple, cruel, manipulative, brutal, coercive, unjust bead. She had twenty minutes to cast the spell and become a slaver, perhaps a lobotomist. Or not cast the spell and guarantee the execution of them both. But it was a spell, so, Hell, she’d cast it on Quincy and it would rain cookies and punch. Then, while they were cleaning up, the Society would sweep in and kill them."

Carole Walsh lives quietly as a community college history professor in a sleepy Texas town. She also lives a double life as the magic practicing sentinel keeping watch on a thin spot between worlds for the shadowy Society, a cartel of magic users. But that life is pretty quiet, too; right up until it isn’t. A magically possessed man attacks Carole, and her enigmatic neighbor, James Quincy, jumps in to help her. That’s when things go crazy. Now, the attacks keep coming, Carole has been abandoned and betrayed, and Quincy is getting ever more involved in her magical world. Can Carole find her way back to her old life? Can she break free of the Society? Can she even survive? It ain’t easy being the practitioner of Boca Muerte.

Byron can see the future—just a few maddening seconds, never able to change anything.

It’s a curse she’s been running from for years. Just like she ran away from home where her mother died the day she was born. Where her father blamed her.

But when her father dies suddenly, Byron is finally able to come home. A quick visit, she thinks—collect her inheritance, say hello to her childhood best friend, Chase, and be gone before morning. Except Chase is missing…and no one seems to be looking for her.

Desperate to find her friend, Byron instead uncovers a pattern of young women who’ve vanished from this town over the years—a pattern that points to her dead parents, and to the mysterious source of her visions. Now, with a kidnapper closing in, Byron must learn to break her curse and change the future she’s seen. Her life—and Chase’s—depends on it.

“A riveting thriller with a provocative central mystery… Byron’s story is as searing as her welding torch.” —Holly M. Wendt, author of The Bolton Strid and The Rogers Ladder.

Though she was only fourteen years old, like many other Jews in Eastern Europe's Pale of Settlement in 1907, Rebecca Lieberman gathered her few belongings and left for the United States. What follows is a unique and poetic story of history, war, mysticism, music, abuse, survival and transcendence against the backdrop of New York City in the '20s, '30s and '40s.

“Magdalena’s stirring poems are unsettlingly familiar and eerily transcendent. The persistence, the endurance, the quiet resignation, somehow amounts to the telling of a small woman who is nothing less than mighty.” —Gillian Swain

“The importance of remembering is a cornerstone of the Jewish faith and in this account of the author’s Jewish great-grandmother as she navigates her life of exile, each scene is both clear eyed and evocative, poetic and down to earth, empathetic and far reaching. A marvellous, nourishing book of resilience.” —Judy Johnson

“Magdalena Ball’s powerful re-imagining of her great-grandmother’s life, from crossing the ocean in steerage, alone, at the age of fourteen, to the hardships of immigrant life in New York, is a vivid, lyrical portrayal of a woman that is as much an act of love as it is the preservation of a life, with its lessons of quiet courage in the face of crushing despair.” —Charles Rammelkamp

Filled with dangers from gangs to cults and a mysterious horror element that persists throughout - the overarching gothic love story fills this thrilling, dark adventure up until the haunting end…leaving the reader with an existential dread so deep that it must be read to be understood, yet craving for more.

Rumors of insurrection in Renaissance Pisa spur Florentine authorities to send young lawyer Nico Argenti to investigate. He and his team uncover more than expected: smuggling, abduction, and murder.

Renaissance Italy 1465: After six decades of domination by Florence, agitators in Pisa are taking action. They remember the past when Pisa was an independent State and they are impatient to regain that freedom. Rumors of an impending insurrection reach officials in Florence who dispatch Nico Argenti and his team to find and stop the troublemakers before they resort to violence.

Nico and his colleagues conceal their identities as Florentine Security Commissioners to gain the confidence of Pisan loyalists. The ploy lets them unearth clues, some valuable and some red herrings, that point to the rebel leader, but it also sets Nico as a target.

The hunt turns urgent when the rebels show their resolve by abducting the provincial governor. Nico’s team intensify their efforts to discover the source of the rebels’ weapons which, surprisingly, leads them back to Florence. In Florence’s highest court, Nico uses his legal skills to bring the traitorous arms dealer to justice.

Rebels in Pisa is the fifth book in the award winning Nico Argenti series. It may be read standalone.

Pour a glass and join the adventure from the south of France to Champagne to the California Central Coast.

He slips and slides through a packed itinerary encountering places and people that surprise him – people like Guy Anderson, Dr Sòng, the Mosuo people and the Chinese barber/musicians in Dali who will remain in his memory forever. Despite restrictions, he manages to take some of the best pictures of his life and make his escape with a bit of help from a witchy connection in St Ives.

Series: The Devil's Trill (2.5)

Using a variety of different Trials to create a fair sampling, Naessia’s initiative is set for success… until Hades’ verdicts cause their feuds to escalate. Finding common ground is vital for the stability of Hell, but with each case, the odds are becoming less and less likely.

Set in the world of The Devil’s Trill, Hades draws the reader deep into Lucifer’s kingdom for an exploration into the minds of the wicked.

Chicago director Dwayne Finnegan has a long shot at the big time and only two obstacles: himself and everyone he knows. Dwayne's got an idea of how to direct Shakespeare's least-favorite play that could set him on the road to Broadway. We're talking Bob Fosse choreography, Jimi Hendrix guitars, and the hottest cast in the city of Chicago. But when the show's producer cuts out with the cash, Dwayne decides to produce the show himself, putting his marriage and his meager finances at risk. What could go wrong?

"Richard Engling knows Chicago's famously chaotic and glorious storefront theater scene like the back of his hand. It's the perfect setting for absurd comic hi-jinx." —Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

"Engling's satire on storefront theatre is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. His characters sparkle, his knowledge of the backstage issues of the medium is elucidated with keen insight and comic verve, and he is somehow able to make even the most seemingly unsympathetic characters... into people it's fun to get to know." —Karen Topham, ChicagoOnStage.com

PREFACE CHAPTER

An excerpt from an interview with Neuroscientist Dr. Sam Harris:

“Everyone spends almost every moment of their waking life having an inner conversation with themselves (unconsciously thinking). And this conversation has a character that is typically unhappy. It’s mostly worrying about the future, or regretting the past, or judging everything around you.

Or you’re just distracted from things you are trying to pay attention to. Right? It’s hard to even read a page of text and get to the bottom of it without being de-railed like 15 times by your own thoughts.

So this automaticity of thought goes uninspected. Whose character is at best benign but often very unpleasant. Which is formative of our psychological states moment to moment and produces negative emotions like anxiety, and envy and shame and on and on.

And we live with this for basically every moment of our waking lives and meditation is a way of noticing that (unconscious processes of the mind). To the point of actually breaking the spell.

So you are no longer identified with the thoughts that would otherwise make you miserable. It becomes something of a doorway out of ordinary forms of suffering.

This is orthogonal to all the research that’s telling us this is one of the best things you can do for your well-being!”

Dr. Sam Harris

FACTS (Explained throughout this book)

• If you’re a human being, then you spend about half your waking moments unconsciously thinking (asleep while awake). “A wandering mind is an unhappy one” - Killingsworth and Gilbert, DOI: 10.1126/science.1192439

• Unconscious thinking is the function of a large scale brain network called the Default Mode Network.

• If you’re unconsciously thinking, then you’re asleep while awake.

• If you’re asleep while awake, then you’re focusing all your attention on the autonomous self-conversation, self-dialogue that occurs inside everyone’s mind.

• If you’re focusing all of your attention on the autonomous self-conversations of the thinking mind or Default Mode Network, then you miss out on the real world (5 senses).

• If you miss out on the real world by the lack of focus on the 5 senses, then you’re probably unhappy.

• 1 in 4 adults in the US are prescribed mental health medications.

• All mental health diseases, like stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, Alzheimer’s, autism, sleep disorders, eating disorders, addictions, anger, violence, suffering, etc. are the results of unaware attention and identification to the auto-suggestions of the autonomous unconscious thinking mind or Default Mode Network (Primitive Egoic Mind).

• The benefits of meditation are available to EVERYONE right now and are always FREE; with or without mental health diseases.

• Meditation is not equivalent to sitting cross-legged in a lotus position looking like you’re sleeping.

• Meditation is not not doing anything.

• Meditation is the awareness of focusing your attention on your surroundings by the use of your 5 senses at any one time.

• When you’re meditating, you’re conscious and experiencing the real world through the use of your 5 senses.

• When you’re not meditating during awake times, then you’re unconscious following the matrix of the Primitive Mind.

• If you don’t suffer from mental disease, you’re still unconscious about half your waking moments following the auto-suggestions from the Default Mode Network.

• Meditation significantly reduces or completely eradicates stress, anxiety, depression, and pain, and enhances peace, memory, attention, perception, focus, awareness, self-concept, and well-being. It increases imagination, creativity, patience, tolerance, acceptance, and compassion. It eliminates negative emotions and feelings and lowers heart rate, blood pressure and improves sleep along with incalculable other benefits. Research is ongoing to better understand the positive effects of meditation on health (psychological, neurological, and cardiovascular) and other areas.

• Meditation will connect your brain to itself in orders of magnitude, as proven by science (see scientific journals towards the end of this book).

• You don’t need to be a Buddhist monk or come from India or Asia to meditate.

• You don’t need to change any of your current ideologies or beliefs to meditate.

• You don’t need to learn Buddhism or any other religion to meditate.

• You don’t have to change your daily schedule and/or routines at any time or day in order to meditate.

• You don’t have to take an hour of your everyday busy life in the morning and at night to sit alone and be quiet.

• Meditation can be achieved at any one moment doing whatever it is you’re doing at anyone time. Explained throughout this book.

• The majority of the population on Earth is influenced by the auto-suggestions of the Default Mode Network.

• The auto-complete of the Default Mode Network is responsible for most of the suffering on this planet.

• You never know what your next thought will be.

• If you don’t know what the next thought will be, that only means that you’re not the one doing the thinking.

• If you don’t control your mind, then it has control over you.

• Meditation is the only way to stop the influence from the Default Mode Network.

• Anyone in the world can be taught to rewire their brains by focusing their attention on their surroundings in order to stop the advances of influence from the Default Mode Network (Primitive Egoic Mind). Follow my techniques explained throughout this book.

• Meditation is easy. 10 year olds can learn. So can you!

• This transformation is available to ANYONE that is willing to stop their unaware bondage to their Primitive Egoic Mind or Default Mode Network of unconscious thinking.

• This transformation is available to ANYONE who wants to be familiar with higher states of consciousness and in doing so experience the full power and utmost unfathomable benefits of the most awesome machine ever to be thought of.

Sometimes Inspector William Fox likes to go off script, like when chasing gangsters in his cigarette boat on the St. Lawrence River. For one case, the RCMP officer with a penchant for luxury fashion finds himself teamed up with FBI Special Agent Patrick Reilly, an Irish lad who prefers absinthe to Guinness. The pair travel overseas to track down members of a gang who have kidnapped Tracy Jordan, an American academic and archeologist with teenage ties to William. In China, Tracy has been stealthily searching for evidence of Admiral Zheng He’s 15th-century connections to the area that would later be known as Nova Scotia. It’s here that Tracy and her team discover what might be Ming dynasty artifacts transported by Zheng He’s “massive treasure ships” left behind on Mi’kmaq peoples’ ancestral land.

Outfoxed is a slick, globe-trotting adventure that involves the RCMP and FBI chasing the Foo Dog Triad operating in Hong Kong, mainland China, and New York City. Like Tracy and Kevin Steptoe, a Mi’kmaq lawyer, the gangsters are after the ancient Chinese treasures. Outfoxed is also a political thriller, diving deeply into the power struggles of the Communist Party of China and its shadowy operatives. It wades into the Fox family’s political past in South Korea, where a tragedy took place that still haunts William years later.

The publication of the Book of Mormon in 1830 began a new scriptural tradition. Resisting the long-established closed biblical canon, the Book of Mormon posited that the Bible was incomplete and corrupted. With a commitment to an open canon, a variety of Latter Day Saint denominations have emerged, each offering their own scriptural works to accompany the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other revelations of Joseph Smith. Open Canon breaks new ground as the first volume to examine these writings as a single spiritual heritage.

Chapters cover both well-studied and lesser-studied works, introducing readers to scripture dictated by nineteenth- and twentieth-century revelators such as James Strang, Lucy Mack Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Harry Edgar Baker, and Charles B. Thompson, among others. Contributors detail how various Latter Day Saint denominations responded to scriptures introduced during the ministry of Joseph Smith and how churches have employed the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Lectures of Faith over time. Bringing together studies from across denominational boundaries, this book considers what we can learn about Latter Day Saint resistance to the closed canon and the nature of a new American scriptural tradition.

Have you ever watched your horse do something that defies human logic and wondered, “Why does my horse act this way?”

If so, you’re not alone. Horses are designed to survive in the wild, yet occasionally the wires between domestication and instinct get crossed. Meredith Hill is back with her equine expertise to explain:

✓ How horses act in the wild

✓ How some of these behaviors manifest in the stable

✓ And what you can do about it!

Have you ever wished your horse had the power of speech for just a few minutes, so they could explain why they’re acting crazy? Horses can be complicated and mysterious creatures, but often, their behavior is the direct result of:

✓ Pain and discomfort

✓ Prior training flaws

✓ Abuse or neglect in a former home

In many cases, behavioral issues can be addressed with empathy and training. In Why Does My Horse Act Like This? Understanding Equine Behavior in your New Horse, Meredith Hill will explain the whys and hows of problem horses, including issues like:

✓ Bucking

✓ Bolting

✓ Biting

✓ And acting politely when being handled by humans

Ms. Hill also addresses when to call a professional, and how to gauge whether a particular professional is going to be beneficial for you and your horse.

As responsible horse owners, we want our equine companions to be healthy and happy. In Why Does My Horse Act Like This? Understanding Equine Behavior in your New Horse, Meredith Hill helps you understand what your horse’s behavior is telling you, and what you can do to make life a little more comfortable for everyone involved.

Grok Your Life is an anthology of poems that took me to the essence of who I am. Written during moments of contemplation and reflection this book attempts to take the reader through a journey of self-discovery and understanding.

The dictionary meaning of ‘Grok’ is to understand profoundly by intuition. But how do we do that? When we are thrown into a situation, we have thoughts about the facts of the situation. These facts may appear very real to the mind, and it triggers feelings. We tend to believe all that our mind tells us, and this leads us to taking actions based on these feelings. The more we ruminate on these thoughts the more intense are the feelings and hence shape the way we act on them. The way we act can impact the situations either positively or negatively which in turn feeds more thoughts and this vicious cycle of thoughts – feelings – action continues.

Poetry being the most intuitive form of written expression, I decided to pen the intuition behind my thoughts, feelings and emotions in the form of poetry. This book, written in freestyle, is a sincere attempt to express my humble views and reflections on what I have learnt and continue to learn about what it takes to grow beyond my limited identity while still living a normal worldly life and how to break free of this cycle.

The Roman Empire in the first century A.D.

A network of agents known as The Cohort is run by the powerful Roman politician known as Senator Tatius whose goal is to return the empire to its republican roots. When Emperor Caligula is assassinated by his own bodyguards in 41 A.D. and “Uncle Claudius” is put on the throne by the Praetorian Guard, The Cohort faces a challenge to its very existence.

Rome’s plan to conquer distant Britannia requires control of an important naval base in Mauritania located at the Pillars of Hercules between the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans. The base must be secured by an Army legion before a political delegation to the region can extract tribute from the local Berber tribes, by force if necessary.

Two novice operatives of The Cohort are secretly placed into a Mauritanian delegation to report back to Senator Tatius about naval and trade negotiations. Legatus Linius Crispus Valerius, head of The Cohort in Asia Minor, (see The Quiet Centurion | Book I), gives two young men their orders and sends them into a web of diplomatic and military intrigue. Linius Crispus and his mysterious assistant, Ming, run into their own dangers in Roman provinces across norther Africa and Syria. They cross paths with Barnabas and Saul of Tarsus when they pass through Antioch. A surprise ending includes the Apostle Thomas as he takes the Gospel to India.

The Third Emissary | Book II continues a fictional series that traces the lives of a Christian centurion, his family, and a host of characters during the period 35-74 A.D. The rapid spread of Christianity intertwines with the inexorable expansion of the Roman Empire.

The games in this book are from the years 1963 to 1974 when I was active in the local leagues (Portsmouth and London) and various South of England Open tournaments (e.g. Bognor Regis and Hastings). Most of the games I have not collected (or annotated) before and many were played at a rapid rate (e.g. 10 or 15 minutes each with no increment). It also contains my recollections of my friend Mike Dymond, chess player, painter, and photographer who died this past year.

In the second book of this adult science-fiction thriller, a young immigrant woman, from Colony Three, becomes an outcast within Eden’s class system but decides to retaliate, and she aims to recruit Randal Scott, one of the colonies’ liberators, into a social-justice organization involved in a shadow war against bigoted extremists.

Able to be enjoyed as a standalone story, this book is the perfect introduction for newcomers to the Wars of the New Humanity series, and it provides new thrills for returning readers.

What is the journey of a lottery beneficiary, a colony immigrant, like? What happens when an immigrant is transplanted on Eden, the utopian motherworld of humanity’s intergalactic republic, with hopes and dreams only to find themselves still marginalized by a class system? Akane Sugimori, a nineteen-year-old immigrant, found out, suffering through one tragedy after another.

Akane fortunately survived the hardships of Eden’s class system and now attempts to recruit Randal Scott, one of the colonies’ liberators, into a social-justice organization fighting for immigrant equality. Randy seems to be the perfect prospect, now finding himself a pariah among his brothers and sisters-in-arms since siding with the Coalition and taking part in the Battle of the Quad. But Randy discovers there’s more to this organization than meets the eye, as he becomes entangled in a violent shadow war that may have a seismic impact on the New Humanity’s future.

Bullying is a sad reality of life that begins all too soon and forever changes the bully and the bullied. In Tattletales From School, Dr. Maryanne Kane tells Carrie’s and Annie’s individual and shared stories to explore the roots of what leads one child to physically, emotionally and psychologically abuse another.

It is also a tale of how all of us can find not only the strength to rise above our challenges, but personal forgiveness and redemption, through faith - both in ourselves and something greater. The most important lesson from school for Carrie, Annie and us is that there are no definitive answers to any of our questions - but there is always hope.
