auē

  • (verb) to cry, howl, groan, wail, bawl.
  • (interjection) expression of astonishment or distress.

Taukiri was born into sorrow. Auē can be heard in the sound of the sea he loves and hates, and in the music he draws out of the guitar that was his father's. It spills out of the gang violence that killed his father and sent his mother into hiding, and the shame he feels about abandoning his eight-year-old brother to a violent home.

But Taukiri's brother, Ārama, is braver than he looks, and he has a friend, and his friend has a dog, and the three of them together might just be strong enough to turn back the tide of sadness.

This bestselling multi-award-winning novel is both raw and sublime, introducing a compelling new voice in New Zealand fiction.

A bold and absurd new take on the dystopian plague novel, where people are treated like IKEA furniture

Picture it: a world, post-pandemic (not our pandemic). In a rush to save humanity, people are flat packed like pieces of Ikea furniture. But later, it's discovered that the flatpack humans are toxic when unpacked: their off-gassing kills. In this parallel universe created by Robert ("This guy knows what he's doing." - Zadie Smith) McGill, a market for these flat packed humans emerges on the dark market...

So begins A Suitable Companion for the End of your Life.

Distraught and hopeless, eighteen-year-old distance runner, Regan, decides to end her life. Ordering a flatpack off the Dark Web will accomplish that and provide a companion for her last days. Enter Ülle.

Flatpacks are supposed to have amnesia, but Ülle begins to remember her past and the outrageous steps her government took to combat the deadly pandemic of parasitic infections, which have brought her to this new country and to Regan’s house. Meanwhile, Regan might be changing her mind, and she finds herself more and more concerned about keeping both Ülle and herself alive. But the shadowy organization that brought them together wants to keep them both quiet – permanently.

A Suitable Companion for the End of Your Life is a darkly comic dystopian tale that probes our anxieties around boundaries, whether territorial or bodily, and our fraught desire not to die alone.

"Gripping from the first page, Robert McGill's A Suitable Companion for the End of Your Life is a dark, speculative novel with echoes of The Handmaid's Tale, set against the backdrop of a plague. Some of us would do anything to survive, down to flatpacking ourselves like IKEA furniture, while others would do anything to make our miserable lives end. This is timely, provocative, ethically challenging fiction that asks whether the drive to survive is stronger than the inevitability of death." -Ian Williams, author of Reproduction

"Terrifying and tender, A Suitable Companion's sci-fi angle serves to frame a fascinating parable about the post-post-modern family. Unpredictable and completely original, this is a propulsive, rewarding, and thought-provoking read." -Michael Redhill, author of Bellevue Square

"The guy knows what he's doing, from missing children to silk parachutes, you are never lost and he will catch you." - Zadie Smith, author of NW

"A storyteller who refuses to keep things straight, and for this produces freshly captivating effects." - Andrew Pyper, author of The Demonologist

"A writer of striking talent and originality." - Daily Mail on The Mysteries

"McGill is a talented writer, adept at expressing the nuanced, unspoken truths that beg the lies by which we live." - Observer on The Mysteries

Fall in love with this lyrically written and lushly illustrated exploration of identity and home that celebrates all the places and people who make us who we are.

"And where shall we go?" Mama asks as she tucks me in.

"South Africa. Where I was born."

My answer summons Mama's stories, stories that send us soaring back in time to when I was a baby. Out my window. Down my street. Across water. Across continents.

Where do you come from? Where does your family come from? For many children, the answers to these questions can transform a conversation into a journey around the globe.

In her first picture book, author Patrice Gopo illuminates how family stories help shape children, help form their identity, and help connect them with the broader world. Her lyrical language, paired with Jenin Mohammed's richly textured artwork, creates a beautiful, stirring portrait of a child's deep ties to cultures and communities beyond where she lays her head to sleep.

Ultimately, this story speaks a truth that all children need to hear: The places we come from are part of us, even if we can't always be near them. All the Places We Call Home is a quiet triumph that encourages an awakening to our own stories and to the stories of those around us.

"A vivid, important, and inspiring book."-- Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Sixth Extinction and Under a White Sky

"Eloquently mulls the ecological dynamics of forests as well as the social, economic, cultural, and political forces that determine their fate."--LA Review of Books

A powerful book about the decline and recovery of the world's forests--with a provocative argument for their survival.

In A Trillion Trees, veteran environmental journalist Fred Pearce takes readers on a whirlwind journey through some of the most spectacular forests around the world. Along the way, he charts the extraordinary pace of forest destruction, and explores why some are beginning to recover.

With vivid, observant reporting, Pearce transports readers to the remote cloud forests of Ecuador, the remains of a forest civilization in Nigeria, a mystifying mountain peak in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and the boreal forests of western Canada and the United States, where devastating wildfires are linked to suppressing the natural fire cycles of forests and the maintenance practices of Indigenous peoples.

Throughout the book, Pearce interviews the people who traditionally live in forests. He speaks to Indigenous peoples in western Canada and the United States who are fighting to control their traditional forested lands and manage them according to their traditional practices. He visits and speaks with Nepalese hill dwellers, Kenyan farmers, and West African sawyers who show him that forests are as much human landscapes as they are natural paradises. The lives of humans are now imprinted in forest ecology.

At the heart of Pearce's investigation is a provocative argument: planting more trees isn't the answer to declining forests. If given room and left to their own devices, forests and the people who live in them will fight back to restore their own domain.

Moving between Cuba and the U.S., the stories in Are We Ever Our Own trace the paths of the women of the far-flung Armando Castell family.

Related but unknown to each other, these women are exiles, immigrants, artists, outsiders, all in search of a sense of self and belonging. The owner of a professional mourning service investigates the disappearance of her employees. On the eve of the Cuban revolution, a young woman breaks into the mansion where she was once a servant to help the rebels and free herself. A musician in a traveling troupe recounts the last day she saw her father.

Linked by theme and complex familial bonds, these stories shift across genres and forms to excavate the violence wreaked on women's bodies and document the attempt to create something meaningful in the face of loss. They ask: who do we belong to? What, if anything, belongs to us?

Powerful and moving, A Visit to Moscow is inspired by the true experience of an American rabbi who travels to the Soviet Union in the 1960s, a dangerous time of uncertainty and fear for Jews in the nation.

"Stirring and tragic and hopeful all at the same time. Extraordinary illustrations, compelling words, and a heartbreaking story make it a book to cherish."
--Karen Cushman, Newbery Award-winning author

"This beautiful, haunting story evokes the tragedy and triumph of Soviet Jewry in a way that few books have managed to do."
--Yossi Klein Halevi, New York Times bestselling author

"A Visit to Moscow gives the true feeling of the tragedy of Russian Jewry. For seventy years we were isolated, not getting the fresh air of Yiddishkeit--we almost starved. And still, Soviet Jewry survived against all odds."

--Yosef Mendelevitch, Prisoner of Zion in the former Soviet Union

In 1965, an American rabbi travels to the Soviet Union to investigate reports of persecution of the Jewish community. Moscow welcomes him as a guest--but provides a strict schedule he and the rest of his group must follow.

One afternoon, the rabbi slips away. With an address in hand and almost no knowledge of the Russian language, he embarks on a secret journey that will change his life forever.

Inspired by the true experience of Rabbi Rafael Grossman, A Visit to Moscow captures the formidable perseverance and strength of the Jewish people during the "Let My People Go" movement, a modern exodus that is often overlooked.

Liz Alterman's engrossing novel is a thought-provoking read about the dark side of suburbia and the secrets of close-knit communities, perfect for fans of Joshilyn Jackson.

When actress and model Allison Langley leaves her former rockstar husband, Christopher, in the middle of the night, it's all her Oak Hill neighbors can talk about. The gossip comes to an abrupt halt when five-year-old Billy Barnes goes missing on his walk home from kindergarten.

Billy's mother, Rachel, blames herself for being at work and letting her only child walk alone. Cassidy, Billy's teenage babysitter, was also late to arrive on the afternoon he disappeared and blames herself for his disappearance.

As the clock ticks down, police are unable to find any trace of Billy, forcing Rachel to ponder the enemies she's made in their well-off suburb. Could it be one of her neighbors who stole her son? Would they abduct Billy to hurt her? How easy would it be to take a child while the parents or nannies are distracted?

When another child goes missing, the town is put under a microscope as the police try to get to the bottom of the disappearances. Will they be able to find the two children, or will it be too late? What secrets lie at the heart of this tragedy, and how far will one go to keep those dangerous secrets buried?

It's hardly an exaggeration to claim that over the last few decades, central bankers have achieved unprecedented status. Especially since the global financial crisis of 2008, the world holds its breath whenever they announce new policy interventions. Given the opaque nature of the money supply, in the eyes of most citizens, the "mystic hand" of central bankers is felt everywhere. Never before have central bank policies been so decisive, not only for financial markets but also for national economies and public welfare in general.

This book traces the way in which central bankers learned, unlearned, relearned and still have to learn the tricks of their trade. The lessons taught by nineteenth-century grands savants like Henry Thornton and Walter Bagehot, once instilled, were eventually neglected. This led directly to the policy mistakes that produced the Great Depression of the 1930s.

When the financial crisis of 2008 broke out, central bankers the world over summoned Thornton's and Bagehot's wisdom and acted accordingly. This re-learning saved the world from a repetition of the Great Depression. But when the worst of the financial crisis and ensuing recession were over, central bankers continued applying unconventional monetary policies--in some areas of the world, this even extended to negative policy interest rates and massive interventions in the bond markets, which resulted in constant injections of liquidity. Once the Covid-19 pandemic arrived, most central bankers doubled down on the intensity of these kinds of policies.

While the financial crisis required central bankers to act in decisive ways, it can no longer be denied that the consequences of these expansive monetary policies have become major issues. Central bank policies of the last decade and a half have resulted in a relentless build-up of leverage and debt; led to speculative bubbles in different kinds of markets; undermined the willingness of political authorities to put their fiscal houses in order; stimulated a "zombification" of the economy and the growth of shadow banking activities; and contributed to growing inequality around the world.

Central bankers are at a crucial turning point for the future of their profession, and even more for the future of our economy. New lessons have to be learnt. Our future depends on these being the right lessons.

A progressive, alternative university is targeted for takeover by conservative forces in this satiric tale.

Aaron Motherway is a Hollywood screenwriter who, while recovering from a traffic accident, is tapped to run the arts program at Parami University, located in Pearl Handle, Wyoming.

What Aaron doesn't know is that he is being set up to fail by various duplicitous forces, and he finds himself immersed in a culture war infused with sexual misconduct, embezzlement, political opportunism, and potential mass murder, played out in a climate of comedic dysfunction and absurdity.

His charming and able assistant has his back, fending off a demented poet and venomous colleagues. And he gains the loyalty of some very challenged students—a murderer, a lobster wrangler, and an apostate.

But there are surprises in store for Aaron before the story reaches a dramatic conclusion.

Buddha Was a Cowboy is a metaphor for many of the issues engulfing and dividing America today, and a darkly humorous take on the current cultural landscape.

"...An imagined life, with Faulkner's tragic sensibility and Beckett's relentless grief." — Ricardo Baixeras, El Periodico

From one of Mexico's leading writers—a memoir about three men who are driven to escape the confines of their traditional lives and roles.

In 1958, Carlos Monge McKey sneaks out of his home in the middle of the night to fake his own death. He does not return for four years.

A decade later, his son, Carlos Monge Sánchez, deserts his family too, joining a guerrilla army of Mexican revolutionaries.

Their stories are unspooled by grandson and son Emiliano, a writer, who also chooses to escape reality, by creating fictions to run away from the truth.

What Goes Unsaid is an extraordinary memoir that delves into the fractured relationships between fathers and sons, grandfathers and grandsons; that disinters the ugly notions of masculinity and machismo that all men carry with them — especially in a patriarchal culture like Mexico. It is the story of three men, who — each in his own way — flee their homes and families in an attempt to free themselves.

Praise for Emiliano Monge's Among the Lost

"Among the Lost is masterly. Its rhythm and syntax form an unforgettable, multilayered requiem for our battered region."
—Valeria Luiselli

"The relentless pace and vivid language... brings home the physical and emotional anxiety of those who have risked everything in the faint hope of a better life across the border... Monge shows how the corruption of the soul afflicts young and old alike when the powerful prey on the vulnerable, yet he also creates nuanced villains grappling with self-doubt and fear. In a remarkable literary feat, this tale of the dire events of one day illuminates the past, the present, and the future. While many questions remain unanswered at the end, this is a comprehensive drama of the human potential for violence and dreams in a fractured land." STARRED REVIEW
—Shoba Viswanathan, Booklist

"This is a book of unbearable beauty and affliction. It is written with the lucidity of someone who has opened his eyes and refused to shut them again. The book's power is not only in what it says, but in the silences that it leaves the reader's conscience to grapple with."
—Yuri Herrera

"The language in Among the Lost is both striking and strikingly easy to read...He channels the full spectrum of written expression, and the result hits the trifecta: beautiful, fast-paced, and completely his own."
—Lily Meyer, NPR

"[A] timely novel of immigration that is as beautiful as it is horrific. It is a multilayered, emotionally complex artistic triumph." STARRED REVIEW

Learning from Black voices means listening to more than snippets. It means attending to Black stories. Reading Black Books helps Christians hear and learn from enduring Black voices and stories as captured in classic African American literature. Pastor and teacher Claude Atcho offers a theological approach to 10 seminal texts of 20th-century African American literature. Each chapter takes up a theological category for inquiry through a close literary reading and theological reflection on a primary literary text, from Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and Richard Wright's Native Son to Zora Neale Hurston's Moses, Man of the Mountain and James Baldwin's Go Tell It on the Mountain. The book includes end-of-chapter discussion questions. Reading Black Books helps readers of all backgrounds learn from the contours of Christian faith formed and forged by Black stories, and it spurs continued conversations about racial justice in the church. It demonstrates that reading about Black experience as shown in the literature of great African American writers can guide us toward sharper theological thinking and more faithful living.

For more than a half century, the Corvette has been celebrated as "America's sports car" by owners and enthusiasts. Since the first model rolled off the assembly line on June 29, 1953, it has been transformed time and again from a well-intentioned-but-underpowered boulevard cruiser into one of the most iconic sports cars of all time!

How did Harley Earl's original vision for a two-seat sports car progress through eight distinct generations to become the car that we know and love today? Who were the visionaries responsible for advancing its form and function over the last 70 years? Also, why has the Corvette continued to find commercial success in an ever-changing marketplace when so many other automobiles have come and gone since its creation?

Corvette Concept Cars: Developing America's Favorite Sports Car answers these questions by delving into the origins of the Chevrolet Corvette and of the countless designers, engineers, drivers, and dreamers responsible for its creation. It explores the personal histories of Corvette's greatest visionaries (Harley Earl, Zora Arkus-Duntov, and Bill Mitchell) and tells how each of their fates were indelibly intertwined with the rich (and sometimes volatile) history of Chevrolet's flagship sports car.

This book is an exploration of the Corvette concept cars from the earliest turnstile dream cars and purpose-built racers to the many unique mid-engined concept and research vehicles that preceded the creation of the current production model: the eighth-generation mid-engine Stingray.

Painstakingly researched and written by Corvette historian Scott Kolecki and packed with more than 350 incredible photographs, Corvette Concept Cars: Developing America's Favorite Sports Car is the quintessential history of the evolution of the Chevrolet Corvette!

Blast through the evolving early years of Funny Car drag racing when doorslammers morphed into flip-top rail monsters. The era features historic mounts from Arnie "the Farmer" Beswick, Al “the Flying Dutchman” Vanderwoude, "Jungle" Jim Liberman, Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, and many more!

The metamorphosis from doorslammers to fiberglass flip-top dragsters wasn’t ever a cut and dry plan. As drag racers pushed the envelope for more speed, a series of innovations quickly evolved and refined the genre.

Funny Cars cut their teeth in the A/Factory Experimental (A/FX) and Experimental Stock (X/S) classes in 1964 with the 2-percent Mopars that looked funny with their axles moved forward. However, it was Jack Chrisman’s supercharged, nitro-fueled 427 Supercharged Factory Experimental (S/FX) Comet Caliente that trailblazed the class on which the NHRA turned its back and the AHRA fully accepted. Showmanship became the draw in the dawn of Funny Car with half-track burnouts and flame-throwing headers that packed fans five deep at the fence.

By 1969, the NHRA had no choice but to create a class for these nitro-breathing, flip-top-sporting rail bruisers, indoctrinating the Funny Car (F/C) class at the Winternationals with 40 cars vying for 16 places in the field. The rest, as they say, is history!

In Sadistic Pleasures, an independent journalist documents the true stories of torture, pain, and merciless psychological abuse endured by 14 Armenian soldiers and civilians who became prisoners of war in Azerbaijan during the Forty-Four Day War in 2020 for control of the autonomous Republic of Artsakh. This book contains their first-hand memoirs of what goes on behind enemy lines, hidden from the scrutiny of the United Nations and international human rights organizations.

The testimonies of these brave POWs reveal the mindsets of the perpetrators of heinous war crimes during the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War—ordinary people who are motivated by generations of political indoctrination of hatred for Armenians. They expose an international epidemic of racism and bigotry behind this humanitarian crisis in the Turkic world that must be overcome through free journalism and public reporting before peace can ever return to this disputed territory.

Additionally, these historic interviews are framed by a historical overview of how the dispute over Artsakh arose. Included here is the region's ancient past, Stalin's reassignment of the region to Azerbaijan during the Soviet Union, the near-unanimous declaration of independence in 1991, the First Nagorno-Karabakh War that followed, and the 26 years of frozen conflict with Armenia since.

Faeries lie.

That’s what the Consilium told Jude when they recruited her into a supernatural cold war against the Court. It’s what her friend Aubrie said too, convincing her to search for illicit magic under their noses.

But he’s half-Faerie like her. And since honesty’s never exactly been Jude’s strong suit either, she probably should have listened. Might have saved her the pain of his betrayal, not to mention a trip to the ICU.

When a shady group of Faeries co-opts her to help them stop Aubrie from taking control of both the human and Faerie worlds, Jude’s tentatively game. Ruining the man who double-crossed her sounds good in theory. Problem is, joining up with these alleged otherworldly allies could condemn humanity to life under a curly-toed boot instead.

Everybody wants to rule the world. Jude just wants some premium tequila shots on a warm, sandy beach in the vicinity of “The Hell Away from This Mess.”

That’s a lie—she’d settle for the cheap stuff.

Imagine being invited in for tea and cakes… only to later learn you were fed human remains.

From suicide attempts to claiming her mother cursed her, to miscarriages and losing ten of her fourteen children, Leonarda’s life wasn’t easy. Protecting her four surviving children became something of an obsession for the woman. Perhaps tragedy loosened her grip on reality, or maybe the fear of losing her oldest to war caused a mental break.

Whatever the cause, Leonarda’s chilling deeds will raise the hair on the back of your neck and leave you wondering if those around you are capable of the same evil.

Follow along her twisted journey that’ll make you question how much one person can take before they do the unthinkable… or if her tragedies were simply an excuse for murder, desecration, and turning remains into cakes and soap. Read and judge for yourself in this true account of Leonarda Cianciulli, the superstitious mother who turned victims into soaps and cakes.

In pursuit of his brother, a man traverses the fantastical and grotesque landscape of Hell, pondering their now fractured relationship.

The poems in Dustin Pearson's A Season in Hell with Rimbaud form an allegorical travelogue that chronicles two brothers' mutual descent into hell. When the older brother runs off by himself, the younger brother begins roaming Hell's different landscapes in search of him. As he searches, the younger brother ruminates on their now fractured relationship: what brought them here? Can they find each other? Will their bonds ever be repaired?

In the tradition of Virgil, Dante, Milton, Swift, Shelley, Joyce, Sarte, and especially Arthur Rimbaud, Pearson leads his speakers on a speculative, epistolary journey through the nether realm inspired by Christian beliefs and tradition. Drawing on the works of French Symbolists and the literary traditions of the American South, A Season in Hell with Rimbaud guides readers through an intimate rendering of one brother's journey to find his lost and estranged brother, perhaps recovering a part of himself in the process.

Welcome to Blue Haven, the world's most lucrative condo corporation—so exclusive that only five lucky residents live in this lush, tropical paradise, housed in a top-secret location. Among them is twenty-five-year-old Aloe Malone, an introvert and former waitress who traded bussing tables for lengthy sleep-ins, ocean dips, Michelin-star restaurants, spectacular sunsets, and unlikely new friends—all thanks to a spurious lottery win. Life's good. Damn good. That is, until Aloe discovers a journal. Seemingly left by a past resident named Eloise whose entries are both sad and evoking, Aloe quickly suspects there's more to Blue Haven than meets the eye. Her suspicions are confirmed when visions arise, gruesome hallucinations she can't understand, followed by a strange yet familiar man lurking in places he shouldn't. Something's wrong. Or maybe it's all in her head. Regardless, she vows to uncover the truth. Except someone wants to keep her quiet, and it's the last person she ever suspected.

Blue Haven is a science-fiction thriller that explores what innovation can achieve—and destroy—despite the best intentions. King's imaginative world building and use of moral ambiguity make this page-turning novel a thought-provoking thrill that's impossible to put down.

Rehearsal pianist Elizabeth Kirtenpepper loves her cramped, corner studio and the cool, unseen depths of the orchestra pit. But when she's mysteriously transported into a real-life 18th-century opera—The Marriage of Figaro—Elizabeth finds herself in a very different kind of pit: the scullery of the ruthless and domineering Count Almaviva.

Stuffed into a corset and forced to wear impractical shoes, Elizabeth meets Figaro, Susanna, and the whole cast of memorable characters. But no one is sticking to their story, and a strange, hooded villain is running through the estate, unraveling every bar line and fermata of Mozart's score! Elizabeth soon realizes that if she wants to return to her 21st-century of indoor plumbing and hair conditioner, everyone else must first return to their original plot.

To confront the nefarious hooded operatic villain (who is undoubtedly a baritone), Elizabeth conjures her own inner diva and sets out to vanquish calamities from leprosy and witch hunts to revolutions in Spain. But the little pianist from Kansas may just end up changing her own story as well, when she discovers that everything she ever really needed to know, she learned at the opera.

Blast down the quarter mile in the first two generations of Ford's legendary pony car across all drag racing classes in Quarter-Mile Mustangs!

Since first becoming a mass-market success in mid-1964, the Ford Mustang has made millions of passes down the quarter mile on sanctioned drag strips. With styling flared toward the youth, aftermarket parts manufacturers saw an enormous opportunity to produce go-fast components to aid in propelling Ford's pony car down the 1320. The success of these cars was immediate.

In the hands of successful and seasoned pros, such as Gas Ronda, Bill Lawton, and Dick Brannan, Ford unleashed the devastatingly potent 1965 A/FX Mustang fastback, which was built by Blue Oval stalwarts Holman & Moody with the 427 SOHC (Cammer) engine that unleashed havoc on mother Mopar.

From those very first factory drag cars through the fabled 1968-1/2 Cobra Jets, drag racing historian Doug Boyce highlights the many successes of pioneers, such as "Dyno" Don Nicholson, Les Ritchey, Phil Bonner, Hubert Platt, and Al Joniec. However, it's not just all doorslammers. As A/FX transitioned into Funny Car, a whole new chapter in Mustang drag racing was written with Mickey Thompson taking the reins and steering Mustangs to success throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The muscle car-era Mustangs joined the Mustang II and soldiered on the best they could as ever-changing rules hampered Ford's new pony body, with drivers Bob Glidden and Nicholson trying to squeeze every bit of performance out of the diminutive pony.

Quarter-Mile Mustangs: The History of Ford's Pony Car at the Drag Strip 1964-1/2-1978 brings forth the most in-depth coverage of these cars at the drag strip. Don't get caught sleeping at the light!

The worst maritime accident in American history killed 1,600 steamship passengers, many starving just released Union prisoners returning north after the Civil War. Explosion of faulty boilers onboard the Sultana early morning on April 27, 1865 sent hundreds of men and women into the frigid Mississippi River near Memphis.

Inspired by actual events, The Sultana Odyssey chronicles the tragedy of 2,300 travelers packed on a steamship built for 400 and the perseverance to survive against nearly impossible probabilities. It follows the journey of young Chicago doctor Finley Horne through the south and his efforts to return his sister from Alabama. Mistakenly tossed into a confederate prison camp, he experiences the atrocities and savagery of southern captivity before escaping and accompanying U.S. Colored Troops transporting their wounded by pushing an abandoned rail boxcar.

The graphic and raw narrative captures the country's mood, greed, passion, values, and conditions: all against an historic backdrop of war and prejudice. Included are realities of an indelible blemish on American history: rampant death, starvation, abuses, and exposure to deadly diseases responsible for most Civil War fatalities.

The doctor's journey concludes aboard the Sultana when explosion catapults sleeping passengers hundreds of yards into the Mississippi River and toward watery graves. Actual reminiscences of survivors reveal graphic and catastrophic efforts treading dark murky water toward a distant shoreline - all shadowed by a raging inferno consuming the steamboat's wood construction and burning alive helpless emaciated prisoners and amputees.

Because it occurred days following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the tragic story of the Sultana remains to this day a little-known footnote of The War Between the States.

Set against the upheavals of the Sixties, Diane Josefowicz's debut Ready, Set, Oh chronicles the struggles of a man who has just lost his draft deferment, a young pregnant woman with fragile mental health, and a UFO-chasing astronomer, each hostages in their own way to their families and to history.

“Lively, clear, and true to its period, Ready, Set, Oh is a spyglass shaped by a historian’s sensibility, offering a peek into an era with ironies and hopes in backtalk to our own.” — Edie Meidav

“A riveting narrative of risk and redemption set against a backdrop of utterly convincing Sixties turmoil. Here are characters in roiling circumstances you will not soon forget, presented in the searing prose of an authentic artist. Few writers are capable of a first novel of such potency.” -- William Giraldi

Providence, Rhode Island, 1967. Tino Battuta returns home from medical school in disgrace and without his draft deferment to attend his grandfather's funeral and to spend time with the love of his life, Primrose Tirocchi. Primrose, an art student, has an abusive home life and serious mental health challenges. But Primrose has plans: she is writing The Book of Love with her best friend while dreaming about living in New York and showing her art in galleries. Tino has a dream as well: to escape the war.

Complicating matters, Primrose is soon carrying Tino's baby. Tino isn't giving her the ring she wants, but Primrose isn't so sure about their relationship either. Soon Primrose falls for Lupo Light, a budding astronomer with a deferment, who is caught up in a popular movement to link political liberation to a wave of UFO sightings.

While Tino and his best friend work on a boat that could be their ticket to Canada, Primrose joins the Students for a Democratic Society while trying to keep a grasp on her tenuous mental health.

Together, Primrose and Tino discover the limits of their finite possibilities as well as the fragility of their resilience. Ultimately, they must confront the question: how much choice do we really have in the paths our lives take?

If their distrust and longing for revenge rekindles the ancient war, both kingdoms will fall before the demons even reach the front gates.

Poems by snail viXen (CRK) exploring the smashing of patterns for emotional abuse within adult relationships due to growing up in the funhouse of covert narcissism. Look out, this collection is a straight shooter about choosing self-love over those with npd and taking back your power for good.

And if you didn't grow up with this undercover shade in your family, maybe you woke up from a dream to find clown shoes by your bed, wondering how you got to be in the middle of a narc family circus act. As the facade gets harder to keep up, the cracks start to show and suddenly, the ringleader is spotlighted.

Well, elephants never forget and neither does karma. These two-faced gossip factories care about one thing: how they are perceived. Anyone who challenges their fake persona will be branded a threat to their fantastical narrative and targeted for life. Boring endless drama. Yawn...

Still, personal accountability plays a part in breaking this horrific cycle as we struggle to heal within ourselves the deep-rooted trauma that doesn't go away until we face it.

Once we do, we are no longer trapped on the island. We can learn to let go of the confusion that was intentionally caused simply because misery loves company. Enough is enough. And we won't give our power over to cowards.

Then, self-love becomes the journey of the empath. We learn to set boundaries and eventually see right through their projections of shame, gossiping, mind games, guilt trips, constant gas-lighting, hidden competitiveness, mental-health-destroying triangulations and silent treatments, to break free and find peace.

Nicoleta has never taken a life before, but she will have to make her first kill soon. Typical of girls her age, she spends a lot of time thinking about boys and college. But when she takes a trip to Romania with several of her former classmates to celebrate graduating from high school, Nicoleta is going to discover who she really is. When Nicoleta learns that she is adopted and that her biological parents live in Romania, it's just the tip of the iceberg. Finding out that her birthright is hunting and killing vampires, Nicoleta has to decide whether to remain in Romania and fulfill her destiny or go back home to America and try to forget about the nightmare of a world that she has been thrown into.

Adding to Nicoleta's problems, one of the most powerful vampires has been waiting for her arrival. Varujan is anxious to meet Nicoleta since her parents are voinicos (people who have survived being bitten by a vampire.) By birth, a voinico's child becomes a vânător (someone who hunts vampires.) Varujan knows that the voinico’s daughter can't outrun her destiny and has anticipated that she would eventually come to Romania. He has been looking forward to killing her. With his vampire companion, Antanasia, Varujan seems unstoppable.

Is Nicoleta ready to face Varujan and Antanasia? The other vânătors have been training to kill vampires since they were children. Will Nicoleta be able to catch up on her missed training and be ready for the battle that is inevitably coming? Can she keep herself and her friends safe, or will they become the vampires' victims before their trip is over? Whatever happens, one thing is for sure. Nicoleta's life is never going to be the same again!

Historian Nora Zvezda is gunning for a promotion at The Chicago Field Museum. When Nora's work with the ancient and mystical weapons draws the attention of the Shadow, a powerful force that feeds off fear and negative emotions, she finds herself thrust in the middle of a perilous, age-old war between good and evil. To protect herself, she must join the Eteria in their fight, all while struggling not to sacrifice the life she's worked so hard for. Complicating things further is her undeniable desire for Adam and the feeling that he may be hiding more than his status as an immortal sorcerer.

Will their dreams fall apart when confronted with all that is stacked against them? Delphinium Nielsen and her sisters have accomplished much in the past year, traveling west and settling in Nebraska. They are on their way to building a garden in dedication to their mother and working against the forces of nature to make their farm thrive. However, none of that can mask their concern that they are quickly running out of money. Del's work teaching in their booming town offers hope, not only to support her sisters financially, but also to better her students' lives. Not all of the town sees it that way, though, with the rebuilding of the schoolhouse continually neglected and her brightest student's father demanding he work the farm instead of attend class. When their brother Anders arrives with his war-wounded and heartbroken friend RJ, Anders sees the strength of the sisters' idea to start a boardinghouse and decides to invest in it. Del finds RJ barely polite and wants nothing to do with him. But despite Del and her sisters' best-laid plans, the future—and RJ—might surprise them all.

Privileged, educated Melissa Cody's search for her birth parents and her volunteer job with a women's advocacy group on the Navajo reservation, casts her into the midst of the egregious problem of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

As she is sensitized to Native culture and to the real possibility of her own bi-racial beginnings, a case of rape of two teenagers and the disappearance of one of the victims, erupts on the reservation, highlighting painful differences in morals, beliefs, law enforcement, trust and understanding.

With a beautiful and balanced literary style of character development, Bruce Logan is able to carefully explore this complex issue through various lenses.

Discover proven healthy habits to restore your health so you feel good all the time!

“It’s like my bible of a plant-based diet with all I need to know to live this way, very well laid out with extra information on a healthy lifestyle that is so relevant too, the whole package.”

There is nothing more exciting than living a lifestyle that gives you back your vitality; reveals healthy weight loss; prevents and often reverses many chronic diseases; helps you to stress less, and love more.

Here is a glance at what you will learn in this book…

  • Powerful yet simple lifestyle interventions that yield results in days
  • Why your lifestyle and dietary habits are damaging your health
  • Myth-busting – there’s no proof that a whole food plant-based (WFPB) diet is better than other diets; you can’t get complete protein by just eating plants; heart disease runs in my family, so there’s nothing I can do about it.
  • The little-known activities that can restore your mind and body
  • How certain breathing techniques can revitalize your daily life
  • Practices that will reward you with youthful longevity
  • Recognize and manage your stress, and how a WFPB lifestyle can help lift your mood and reduce anxiety.
  • Heart diseases, their symptoms, the science behind the dramatic results, and a simple nutrition-based plan that can help mitigate the risks of getting them.

Stefan Rieder chronicles his journey from near-death to optimal health. Stefan aspires to help others live their lives to their highest potential by embracing healthier eating and lifestyle habits. He shares how his father suddenly died of a massive heart attack at 61, but only analyzed his lifestyle and dietary habits after emergency open-heart surgery nine years later.

This book is a paradigm-shifting voyage with cutting-edge research about a lifestyle that can have profound ramifications for your health.

In a neighborhood nondescript except for how often small houses are being torn down to make way for big houses, a beautiful woman too young to be widowed waits for her husband to come home from prison. Arthur Baladino is getting out courtesy of a compassionate leave program, the theory being that he's too feeble to shoot anybody else.

Next door to the Baladino home, a little boy in a baseball uniform asks his father, "What happens when you die?" It's a question the father will soon confront in a terrible and surprising way. Just down the street, a young woman is trying to figure out how to re-start her life after her husband has lost his money, hers, and their home by day-trading in their basement. Elsewhere in the neighborhood, several women and a couple of men—two of them accomplished arsonists who've sometimes been employed by Arthur Baladino—dream of what might have been if they'd been wiser, more patient, or luckier in a past long dead everywhere but in their imaginations.

On a landscape more often than not indifferent, these people seek mercy, if not in love, than in the sometimes rickety, temporary alternative connections they can find with their fellow seekers.

Worse, the culprit isn’t just a demon, but a self-proclaimed goddess who will stop at nothing to carry out her bloody quest for justice.

To stop the killings, Lily must confront that which she most fears: the truth about what went down with Eve's father in the desert—and its consequences.

That is, if the goddess doesn't get to her first.

Westerners today grow up with abundant opportunities to determine their own values, identities, and roles in society. But for generations, millions who lived under Soviet rule in the USSR had these essential freedoms withheld, determined instead by a central authority that claimed the right to choose for them and enforce their compliance. Thirty years after the Soviet Union’s decisive collapse, the old communist paradigm continues to limit those who come of age in a post-Soviet world.

Everyone Is an Entrepreneur showcases the experience of an American author acclimating to life in the developing post-Soviet economy of Armenia. Along the way, he examines how the intelligent and hardworking people he lives among are stuck in a state of transition away from all-encompassing, bureaucratic control. They struggle to adjust to the responsibilities of economic self-determination because they have never learned how to see the world through entrepreneurial eyes.

Entrepreneurship is a principled way of seeing the world, a paradigm that applies to people in all cultural and economic circumstances: Artists, office workers, doctors, teachers, farmers, and laborers alike. By adopting this universal outlook, anyone can produce more wealth, accomplish bigger goals, and take control of their life like never before.

Real Sugar is Hard to Find is a collection of stories for reluctant witches and sugar smugglers, tree whisperers, ark builders, and soil thieves. The stories herein explore the intersections of deep-rooted and timely issues such as climate change, reproductive justice, queer identities, and family trauma. Whether fantasy, science fiction, or terrifyingly close-to-home, the worlds of these stories are inhabited by flawed characters whose lives are profoundly impacted by climate change and environmental degradation.

Arranged in a progression from dystopian to utopian worlds, the stories chart a path from climate despair towards resilience and revolutionary optimism. Even in the bleakest of futures, however, Kern offers reasons to hope, connect, and keep fighting for a better world.

Like Kelly Link’s Magic for Beginners or Karen Russell’s Vampires in the Lemon Grove, Kern's stories are unflinching, intimate explorations of trauma and our deepest fears, rendered irresistible through the infusion of fantastic speculative elements and a dark sense of humor.

Series: Her Journey (2)

A stress-free, last-minute, long overdue vacation in Iceland is all Ava Espinosa wants. So she does what she does best and plans every detail down to the minute. The trip is just what she needs to reignite that spark missing from her life before taking her new promotion.

Brooks Jónsson doesn’t give a crap about itineraries. He’s a search and rescue pilot, not a tour guide, but his dad is counting on him to help him with the business. Naturally, he’d get stuck with a tourist carrying a three-inch binder of her travel plans. He needs to focus on pinpointing whatever is affecting his hometown’s fishing trade and crushing their economy, not a high-strung tourist.

From not apologizing when he almost runs her over to spoiling her rigid schedule with his tardiness, Brooks isn’t shy about his contempt for Ava. What he isn’t expecting is Ava giving that attitude right back. Every time she opens her sassy mouth, all he can think of is silencing her with a kiss.

When Ava catches wind about the mystery affecting the town’s marine ecosystem, she offers her expertise. Although the town is desperate for help, Brooks doesn’t trust outsiders. But Ava isn’t so easily deterred and with the rest of the townspeople accepting her into their fold, he struggles to hold onto his go-it-alone approach.

As Ava and Brooks reexamine how they’ve lost sight of what matters, they soon learn that opposites attract. But with happily ever after on their horizon, their past choices emerge, threatening to tear them apart.

For all her adult life, Roxy suppressed the impact of two traumatic events—being abandoned by her mother at the age of twelve and being raped by her boyfriend, Spider, at eighteen. She never told anyone but her best friend about the rape. Though happily married to Carl, they both long to be out from under the thumb of Carl’s domineering father, for whom they both work. And she’s convinced that her first play—being staged at the community theater with her movie-star friend from high school in the lead role—is the ticket to that better life.

But now Spider is back, a successful land developer with a proposal to revitalize the town and solve the theater’s financial woes. When he takes an interest in Jewel, Roxy’s eldest daughter whose paternity she’s not entirely sure of, and engineers a big win for Carl in a private poker game, Roxy knows he’s up to his old tricks. She’s determined to expose him before he can harm her family or her beloved theater.

Karen E. Osborne traces the treacherous path between good intentions and poor decisions rooted in the shame of toxic secrets.

Interview with the Sphinx (Audio Play)Quick Look
Digital audiobook

In this provocative and immensely irritating comic play, the Sphinx from ancient Greece is interviewed in modern times as though she were a celebrity pop star. The problem is she never answers any questions—never directly, anyway. Instead, she prefers just dishing the dirt on everybody.

This witty 67-minute audio play stars Jill Brumer as the Sphinx and Neal Gage as the interviewer. Part Tom Stoppard, part Monty Python, part Oscar Wilde, this play by Jack Matthews combines philosophical paradoxes with fast-paced verbal pyrotechnics. It offers the perfect antidote to people who remembered ancient literature as nothing but stuffy and melodramatic characters with hard-to-pronounce names.

Neal Gage is a Houston actor and teacher who has appeared in several features and comic sketch videos on Funny or Die. Jill Brumer has an MFA in Media and Performing Arts and teaches theater at Houston colleges. Jack Matthews (1925-2013) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, and former professor in Ohio.

Series: Circle Seven (2)

Matilda Ashby has seen the monsters that lurk in the shadows of Manhattan—and within the walls of her family business. While creatures of myth aren’t hunting her anymore, she can’t say the same for Samson, her former bodyguard, after a photograph of the telepath in danger finds its way to her desk. Desperate to save him, Matilda dusts off her Manolos and ventures back into the supernatural world, a world she wanted nothing more than to leave behind.

However, Matilda isn’t the only one searching for Samson. Necromancers, sent by Samson’s former boss, are hot on her heels, and her MBA curriculum didn’t include a course on how to kill them. So, in order to save Samson, she’ll have to trust former enemies—and her instincts—to get him back.

But in a world where being human is a weakness and being kind is a liability, Matilda isn’t sure how she can succeed in saving him, especially when her brother, and the family business, needs her too.

If you like Charlaine Harris, K. F. Breene, or Phillipa Bornikova, you’ll love this urban fantasy romance with mystery, suspense, and family drama!

Introduction to the Whole Food Plant Based Lifestyle to Restore Your Health: How 5 Healthy Habits can Transform Your Life, Regain Your Mind & Body, and Reward You with Youthful LongevityQuick Look
Digital audiobook

A DARK ARMY RISES,

A NEW SHIP SAILS THE SEAS,

AND OLD ONES, LONG SILENT, ARE SUMMONED FORTH TO LEAD.

Whereas only a few months earlier he would not have believed any of it, Salem Swan now finds himself faced with sinister enemies and, equally surreal, surrounded by close friends. He has gained powers as a mythlinguist, and with it a responsibility to reunite the world of humans with the world of myth, known as the Fringe.

With his uncle Ulysses and Captain Fern taken prisoner by a growing Regulat force, it's up to Salem and the crew to seek help in old allies. This takes them to the heart of the Amazonian rainforest, where a city concealed in waterfalls tests the measure of their resolve.

Meanwhile Regulat forces conspire to eliminate fringers of the World Beneath and bear down on a sacred space with a terrible force that knows no mercy.

The world is changing faster than anyone realizes, and salvaging its best parts now rests in the hands of three teenagers and a mythical crew who cannot stand to see it lost.

Public media is awash with the deteriorating state of our planet. Every new climate report shows a worse scenario than the one before, and the prophesized outcome is always the same—worldwide disaster.

In A Guide to the Climate Apocalypse, Vítězslav Kremlík delivers a refreshing and objective analysis of the history and science behind climate change. Books about climate change frequently endorse a narrow, often malicious angle of total indoctrination or abject denial of the official story. Kremlík employs a direct and detailed critique of not only the studies that have led to our current understanding of large-scale changes in the weather but also the political biases and motives behind global action taken in response to it.

Proceed step-by-step through the history of how we came to understand everything we currently do about climate change, including natural climate cycles, modern carbon footprints and pollution, periods of extreme weather, ocean acidification, biofuels, climate doomsayers, hockey stick graphs, and our dear old friend Al Gore.

Kremlík’s informative guide offers an expert-backed new perspective on the history and politics of our understanding of climate change and the agendas behind those who speak most vocally on it or enforce policies that affect us all. With well-researched and cited real-world findings and examples, it calls all of us to wake up to an accurate and educated view of what is and has been happening to our planet—and what we ought or ought not to do about it.

Sprinkled with humor and a touch of magic realism, THREADS tells the story of a woman who has an extraordinary gift, a woman who needs one, and the man in the middle. Their innocent decisions have knock-on effects that are felt at opposite ends of the globe.

Irene lives with her pragmatic husband Chuck in their North American bubble of middle-class affluence until the bubble is burst by the painful loss of a child. Irene is inconsolable until she rediscovers wool. Then she becomes obsessed. She knits and hoards hundreds of exquisite little sweaters. This triggers a series of bizarre local events, the ripples of which reach the faraway shores of northern Chile, where one of the sweaters is repurposed.

Irene's story is tied to that of Gavin, a young man, who after searching for his own identity, discovers an innate talent for retail fashion. He sees potential at both ends of the fast fashion food chain and establishes a used clothing charity. When his charity receives a donation of hundreds of beautiful little sweaters (Irene's, of course), one of them is inadvertently dropped into a shipment bound for Chile. Here, the little sweater is stolen by Columba, a poverty-stricken single mother who has also lost a child. Enchanted by the little sweater, she converts it into an important icon.

It weaves the stories of two women in distinct cultures who are linked in their search for solace, with that of a young man who rolls along in blissful ignorance. The story dips us into a lush, little Canadian town before shipping us off in a container of discarded clothes and landing us at the driest desert on earth to witness their smoldering demise. The underlying theme of hyper-consumerism and its consequential environmental damage exposes this global reality and its local impacts.

He who laughs last, laughs longest.

Unless he’s dead.

When romance author Hazel Rose is dropped by her publisher, she sees herself heading down a path strewn with has-been authors. While disappointed, Hazel won’t give up without a fight—she signs up for a mystery-writing class, thinking that crime fiction will jumpstart her career.

But what’s a mystery-writing class without a mystery? So when Randy Zimmerman, an obnoxious classmate given to laughing at others’ expense, is murdered, Hazel tackles the case. Solving a real-life murder will surely lend authenticity to her creative writing.

She recruits her book group pals to help with the investigation. Trouble is, there are more suspects than they bargained for—even Hazel herself, who endured Randy’s thumbs-way-down review of her writing, had a motive.

A second body drives the stakes higher, and Hazel doubles her efforts to find who’s behind the murders, unearthing secrets that a killer would go to any lengths to keep hidden.

Will Hazel succeed? Or will this be “The End” for her?

Harriet is an intriguing and original "take" on Jane Austen's immortal Emma, by Publishers Weekly’s 2021 BookLife Prize quarterfinalist, Alice McVeigh. In it she imagines that Harriet is clever enough to pretend to be stupid, in order to flatter Emma Woodhouse’s vanity, and to gain a foothold in society.

The Blurb: Emma, a privileged young heiress, decides to mentor Harriet Smith, a pretty boarding-school pupil, and to matchmake her as eligibly as she can… But how is she to guess that Harriet has a secret?

Meanwhile, the brilliant, penniless Jane Fairfax consents to a clandestine engagement with Frank Churchill – though not daring to confess, even to him, that she is being relentlessly pursued by her best friend’s husband.

Harriet sidelines Emma herself in favour of the ingenious Harriet and the fascinating Jane Fairfax. It is Emma – but an Emma with a surprisingly believable twist in its tail.

If you know the song, you know Brandy's sailor loved the sea more than her (The bastard). Brandy, You're a Fine Girl is historical fan fiction, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1972 hit song. Brandy's story doesn't end when the music stops—her destiny is filled with adventure!

Crum, England, mid-1800s: "Brandy," he told me, "you're a fine girl," he said. "You'd make a good wife." Barmaid Brandy seizes on a plan to become that good wife and escape her life of drudgery. A pregnancy would be just the thing to get him to marry her. When that doesn't work, she crosses paths with Elliot, a nobleman in need of a wife and heir by his fast-approaching 30th birthday, or else his inheritance will go to his scheming cousin Clarence. Once married, Elliot's problems appear solved, and Brandy has a kind husband and a warm and comfy new home, even if it is full of Elliot's odd band of friends.

Everyone tries to get along and put up with Brandy's strange cravings and profanity-laden drama, until they discover she was never really pregnant. She fears she'll be kicked out, but not to worry—there's still time for Elliot to fulfill his husbandly duty and save the day. Or is he... up to the task? When Elliot's handsome—and virile—best friend Beau shows up, Brandy promptly falls head over heels. She becomes pregnant, but will it be too late? Swearing she can live on love, Brandy dreams of running off with Beau, until she discovers a shocking secret about her husband and his best friend. Will the baby arrive before Elliot's 30th birthday? Will it even be a son and therefore true heir? And who is the mysterious one-armed carpenter from Brandy's past? Fear not—Brandy always has a back-up plan. From the tarnished silver locket (that turned her neck green, but may hold a pirate's map), to a secret passageway containing hidden treasure, Brandy is determined to get by on her wits and her tits.

The #1 hit song, Brandy, You're a Fine Girl, was written and composed by Elliot Lurie and recorded by his band, Looking Glass. Dee DeTarsio is an award-winning writer living in southern California. She hopes Elliot Lurie enjoys Brandy living her best life and enjoying fine adventures!

Jess used to be a man. Then he found himself in a female body.

It wasn't funny.

Why would anyone even think it was?

*

There's a scene in Tootsie (1982) that is surely one of the most unacclaimed scenes of all time: Dustin Hoffman's character, Michael, as 'Dorothy', makes a suggestion on the set, and the director dismisses it out of hand. As I remember it, Hoffman's face—conveying surprise, confusion, indignation—shows perfectly Michael's reaction to the absence of (and, just maybe, awareness of) male privilege. The entire movie should've been about that. Just that.

It wasn't.

And so I wrote Jess.

A documentation of the author’s reactions to the disclosure by his wife, Vidhi, that she suffered a childhood in India of almost incessant abuse, and that her family covered up the crimes to save “social face”. Interwoven with chronological accounts of Vidhi’s experiences and her later recovery, the narrative tracks the search by Vidhi and the author for justice and accountability, the hostility they encountered, and the support they received from unexpected sources. The text also contains meditations on the nature of evil, the challenges of social reform, in India and around the world, and the consoling power of music when words fail to articulate the depths of depravity. Vidhi’s story is not hers alone. It is a story central to the human condition: countless silenced victims around the world inhabit a shadowy realm of lies and hidden crimes. Truth Is Indestructible suggests that a society can be secure only if it protects its children and demonstrates unequivocally that this protection is inseparable from the rule of law. And it offers reflections on the re-enchantment of a polluted world.

Stuart Nagero was born in the United Kingdom. He earned a doctorate from a British university and has worked in the United Nations system for more than two decades.

A lot can happen in the middle of nowhere!

Preston McPherson thought he could save his troubled dairy farm by growing marijuana, but his problems were only just beginning.

With the help of his brother-in-law and local police sergeant, Fergus Becker, he signs an agreement with a cannabis distributor, Green Fields, but money is still tight. When a greenhouse break-in sends Preston deeper into the red, Fergus—not exactly a model cop—comes up with a scheme to sell marijuana illegally to a drug dealer.

Over time, Preston sets up a secret grow-op, launders the proceeds, and becomes involved in robbery and even murder. At the same time, he needs to bluff his way through government inspections, deal with a local group of women bible-thumpers who are picketing his farm, address the growing demands from the drug peddler, and stay one step ahead of the persistent small-town cop who has been investigating a series of local crimes. If any of them catch up with him, Preston risks losing his farm, going to jail, or being found floating at the bottom of a lake with cement shoes.

Includes Book 1, "Capuchinos House of Secrets," and Book 2, "Secrets Revealed."

Welcome to Capuchinos, the home of the Lorca-Jimenez family.

The story begins in the early years when Marquis Robert and Marquesa Isabella are bringing up their children. They are a privileged family with vast areas of land, wealth and status.

Circumstances change when their position is challenged by political instability in Spain and Isabella’s despair at Roberto’s insistence on regular child bearing.

Then, wayward teenage daughters cavort with the peasants, challenging family dignity and honour. This sets in motion forces they cannot control.

The domestic situation further deteriorates amid tensions between Roberto and the peasants. Then, as violence and political discord in society increases, General Franco challenges the ruling Republican Party and stages a coup d’etat. This provokes civil war between Nationalist and Republican parties. Amongst the turmoil the Lorca-Jimenez family begins to disintegrate.

Following his father’s death, Jaime, his youngest son, tries to keep the family together but Isabella leaves Capuchinos to hide her pregnant daughter with relatives in Madrid. Isabella remains there, briefly enjoying a lavish social life and a relationship with an American journalist.

Republican values, which support equality in society, resonated with disadvantaged people throughout the world. The UK government would not take sides on the Spanish Civil War, but hundreds of individuals left the UK to fight with the International Brigades and the Republicans.

Find out how one of these, an English, aristocratic gentleman, Johnny Hesketh, becomes a real asset fighting for the Republican cause.

The narrative in part two begins with Carolina returning to Capuchinos to search for her boyfriend and to think about her baby. Soon afterwards Isabella returns, fleeing the violence in Madrid. She is traumatised by witnessing the death of her American boyfriend.

Life on the farm is now very different. Jamie worked hard initially with his grandmother to keep his ancestral home intact. But the war meant fewer farm workers available, fields became neglected, the house fell into disrepair. Isabella finds her mother disabled following attacks by marauding gangs. Clara and Gabriella have been placed in a convent for their safety. Jamie has become ruthless and is not averse to killing to achieve his ends. Many crimes were committed at Capuchinos to enable Jamie to keep control. Isabella is no longer the disillusioned woman she was. Taking everything in her stride she rallied, organising the house and farm and even showing compassion to the poor inhabitants living in Carmona by delivering food and clothing.

Jamie is appalled by her lack of understanding of the political implications of her actions. Quarrels threaten to destroy their relationship especially when Isabella opens up Capuchinos as an orphanage for abandoned children.

To support the Nationalist cause and prevent the authorities from accusing his mother of being a Republican supporter Jaime becomes embroiled with blackmail and murder. The Lorca-Jimenez family, however, were adept at covering up their crimes in order to maintain their power, wealth and reputation.

In war time this was not unusual. Capuchinos is not be the only house in Spain to bury its secrets!

Yet years march on. Things change. In the 1980s a more democratic regime opens Spain to investment.

Lucy, buys Hacienda Capuchinos. As Lucy’s renovations take place the house begins to unravel its dark secrets……….. but what are they? What is the true story hidden in Capuchinos’ land and ancient stones?

Enjoy a very human story showing contrasting worlds of violence, hatred, love, compassion, loyalty. Discover narratives of truth and justice disguised within layers of deceit and intrigue. Reflect on how you might respond living in similar circumstances!

Winterbourne, set in 1962, is a family-oriented community, surrounding a winterbourne stream, in Northern California. It is full of white, three rail fences, and equestrian properties. A violent motor vehicle accident and the unsuccessful resuscitation of the victim, a homeless drug using man, by Doctor Franklin Carson and his Labrador, Winston, calls attention to a problem in the small community.

A heroin drug ring is rumored, centered around a violent resident of Winterbourne. The resident is Del Grogan, known as the Redman. He is a ruddy complexioned red-haired man with a distinctive disabling absence of his right arm, lost surgically after an intravenous drug related infection. His father is the corrupt, politically powerful Irish immigrant, Theodore Grogan. It is the search for Theodore's young fiancé, that reveals a secret scandal that will tear apart the community.

The story is an evocative tale of murder, revenge, and love. Here is a riveting story of drugs, murder, and madness that terrorizes the small California community, known as Winterbourne.

With a gifted imagination and artistic soul, Kelley Christine Phelan was led down a path of intimate creative writing. A number of events led to a sudden shift in consciousness while she was at one of her lowest points, with a broken heart; Self-realization, a Kundalini awakening. For a split second, she was brought into union with the creator and felt nothing but pure nirvana. During her dark night of the soul and transformative healing process, the only way out was in. Writing down her life experiences, was a way to release the burdens of the ego and purge the darkness she had been carrying. Not only in this lifetime, but others as well. All poems in this book are her truth.

Series: Storyteller (4)

"Taliesin sang it, so it must be true. In all the years I knew him, I never heard him lie—though there are ways and ways of dealing with the truth, and a bard must know them all. But he was using none of these on the night when he sang Talhaearn Tad Awen’s death song in Prince Cyndrwyn’s high-roofed wooden hall, with the cold wolf-wind of a bitter winter snuffling round the doors and windows, and frightening the flickering torch-flames which cast his long black shadow, now here, now there, across the smoke-stained walls: across the faces of all of us who listened, and across our lives as well." So begins this fourth book of Gwernin Storyteller's adventures, which will take him and Taliesin to Ireland in a time of conflict between Kings, Christian Saints, and Druids.

Is your mindset sabotaging your ability to win with wealth? When it comes to money, your thoughts and feelings are shaped by your deepest values and beliefs. Depending on how you combine them, you'll either get closer to or further from your goal of financial independence. Susan Diamond did not enter the financial field as an economist or a financial planner but as a social worker who was interested in attitudes and emotional reactions to money. With her book, she takes traditional money management to a whole new level by engaging the creative side of the brain in financial wellness, which includes looking at how you feel about money and how you relate to it.

You can benefit from Susan's money-belief formula in the following ways:

Can wisdom be understood, developed, and improved?

Does wisdom really underlie success, fulfillment, and happiness?

What are the characteristics and skills of wise individuals?

Can one be happier and more fulfilled by "loving wisdom"?

Philos sophia is Greek for “the love of wisdom,” and is the precursor of modern philosophy and much of applied psychology. Jason Merchey spent years researching, considering, writing, and rewriting a book he thinks can make an impact on individuals, and on society as a whole, Wisdom: A Very Valuable Virtue That Cannot Be Bought (2022). As a long-time lover of wisdom, Jason Merchey brings a refreshing array of insightful and interesting quotations (and personal reflections) to this deep and wide investigation into the nature of wisdom. Over 1,500 quotations are utilized and many books are cited.

The book approaches the age-old subject of wisdom from the following perspectives: research psychology, ancient and modern philosophy, personal growth, Humanism/secularism, social and political applications that would be termed "moderate" and "progressive"

Asher Solomon is faced with that choice. And makes the ultimate sacrifice.

In order to shut down the program, they face almost insurmountable odds. And their most dangerous foe-their former champion turned killing machine, A36.

With the Thieves' Guild destroyed, can Galan and Grog help a mysterious Druid steal a unicorn from a vampire, or will Sentinel Janu catch up with them first?

Galan, the leader of the Thieves' Guild, and his second in command, Grog, have seen their fare share of robberies, thuggeries, and assorted shady businesses. Just when they thought all was lost, Lady Heatherdown of the Farrowood offers them a job. As a druid, it is not all that surprising that she wishes them to steal a unicorn. However, stealing one from a vampire might prove more than they can handle.

Little do they know, there is an informant in their midst. Sentinel Janu catches wind of their plans and takes on the case personally. It's time someone finally put an end to Galan and Grog before they do anything more to harm the helpless and destitute orphans on the streets of Threerun.

“On the 21st of December, in exactly three months, the world is going to come to an end.”

This phrase echoes in the head of West, a delusional seventeen year old boy. Due to a traumatic event in his past, he carries the burden of complete disdain for human interactions, leading to his complete social alienation. With the end seemingly approaching, he sees no point in finding friends, nor dreams, despite his mother’s hopeless pleas. Aimlessly roaming through life without purpose, loneliness and boredom inevitably seep within and the wish for the end grows stronger every moment. With nothing left to do, he decides to write a diary—a last testament, proof of his meagre existence. Little does he know that life doesn’t always go as planned, and little by little, things begin to change… when certain people decide to enter his life, including a doomsday cult that manifests his delusion into reality. Influencing him for better or worse, he starts to fear that maybe, just maybe, he might need them by his side, when it all comes crashing down.

Diversity in the Workplace Essentials focuses on:

  • Identity
  • Historical influence
  • Organizational Culture
  • Systemic Change
  • Equity v/s Equality

A multi-perspective view of diversity and inclusion in the 21st-century workplace

Diversity in the Workplace Essentials is key to understanding how organizations can leverage and embrace talent from diverse backgrounds and create an inclusive organizational culture. For some, there is a clear correlation between the success of an organization and the diversity it embraces. For others, merely hearing the word “diversity” feels like an imposed “buzzword” that makes people antsy about how to get along at work.

Talk about diversity! This book bridges the two perceptions. It discusses the historical influence of diversity in the workplace and explains challenging concepts to broaden diversity literacy. Professionals gain deeper insight into workplace impacts that may have traditionally been overlooked, disregarded, or misunderstood.

The book does not shy away from difficult topics that many organizations encounter. Instead, it teaches that diversity and inclusion are about progress, not punishment. To recognize, respond to, and nurture diversity within individuals that often impact our workplace, we have to first understand the importance that diversity has holistically.

After reading this book, you will understand:

  • The definition of DE&I
  • How diversity influences the workplace
  • The historical significance of diversity
  • How organizations can best embrace diversity
  • The difference between equity and equality
  • How to leverage and embrace diverse talent

About the Series

Series: Jordan Abbey (2)

Werewolves are apex predators. So why does she feel like prey?

Territory, honor, the trust of her peers - Jordan Abbey has earned none of these from the supernatural residents of Rancho Robles. The werewolves shun Jordan as a creature without honor for siding with the vampires. The vampires dismiss Jordan as an unruly pet who needs to be kept on a much shorter leash. Chased out of the wilderness and not allowed to shift within the city, she is without any place for her inner wolf to run free.

Someone is killing the servants of vampires. Soon vampires themselves fall victim. Each attack is linked directly to Jordan, fueling rumors that she is working to undermine the vampires' grip on the city. The werewolves dog her steps, harassing her whenever and wherever they can.

Then, in the heart of vampire territory, the corpse of a werewolf who bullied Jordan is discovered. The children of the Wolf and the Bat are ready to go to war, and Jordan is caught squarely in the crossfire. Can one woman prevent the all-out annihilation of the only place she calls home?

“Surprises unfold in the predictable... You can never fully foresee the foreseen.”

Long ago, the four tribes of Aerizon lived as one people, but the time of unity has passed. Now, three of the tribes collectively called the Treedles inhabit the forest canopy. The fourth tribe, the Mergons, live on the ground and pose a constant threat to the Treedles. Laela is a young Treedle girl coming of age in the treetop realm of Aerizon. Her destiny, as yet unrevealed, will cast her in the role of catalyst for epic change.

Laela grows increasingly restless with the cultural limits and expectations for young Treedle women. In her quest to understand and express her authentic self, she faces soul-transforming psychological and physical tests. Unlike Treedle women before her, she pushes back against traditional gender and cultural boundaries. Propelled by mysterious forces, she ventures into the forest and onto the lands below, breaking ground for a new era.

As she evolves spiritually, Laela faces mental challenges, redefining her perception of the impact one person can have on the world. Finally, she gains the courage to raise her voice in defense of herself and her people. Seekers of truth and justice will relate to how Laela grapples with the challenge of finding her guiding values.

The number of German immigrants who arrived in Canada in the decades immediately after the end of World War II and during the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) years are dwindling, and the risk of losing first-hand accounts of their immigration experience grows greater with each passing year. The idea of collecting and preserving these stories began to percolate throughout S.W. Ontario's Waterloo Region’s German-Canadian community and here we systematically gather and assess the stories of German immigrants, with research and writing overseen by the Waterloo Centre for German Studies.
