I requested this book because my shelves already contain an alarming number of herbalism books. Most lean heavily into folklore, intuition, and general woodland vibes. As someone with a scientific background (and a brief yet ill-fated stint in medical school), I was curious to see an evidence-based alternative in the hopes it will increase my success in the arena.

This delivers exactly what it promises. It is clearly organised, easy to navigate, and designed as a reference work rather than something to be read cover to cover. I particularly appreciated the bibliography—more books should cite their sources. (and, as an academic, I am contractually obliged to become show more excited whenever I see a well-constructed reference list. "see attached bibliography" is perhaps the sexiest thing that can be said to me in a note)

I also enjoyed the quiet coincidence that the author's name is Hazel. I do have a soft spot for nominative determinism—not because I think it's a universal law, but because fate occasionally seems to have a sense of humour.

My greatest obstacle to becoming a mysterious apothecary-witch remains the inconvenient fact that I have managed to kill mint. And succulents. We're all witches... but not all of us are competent.

This is an excellent resource for both beginners and readers looking for a more systematic approach to herbal remedies. I would happily add a physical copy to my own reference shelf. show less

Great resource for how to use herbs, the specific functions of several common herbs used in medicine (and easy to get at the grocery store!) and recipes for specific ailments. Will be coming back to this one a lot.
