I loved the beginning of this story and Livianna's determination to refuse a marriage to a man she didn't love. Her absolute desire for freedom was so relatable, what woman wants to be controlled. She was a fantastic character that I immediately loved. She didn't want to be the chosen princess; she wanted a choice she could make herself. Even more so because heart had already begun to belong somewhere else. I always wonder what I would do if faced with this level of obligation verse my own freedom and happiness.

Every chapter made me want to turn the page to the next, and I was absolutely dying to know if she would get her soldier. It was hard not to love them together and their intensity was everything!

Much like the last S.D. Huston show more book I read, in this series of stories, this one absolutely left me wanting more of everything; the world, the characters, and the relationships. It's like you finally get them within your grasp, only for the story to end and they vanish, leaving you wishing for another hundred pages! I have so many questions!! 🤣 This is a great short read, especially in between long heavy ones and I loved reading it! show less
Fun little novella with just enough tension and a dash of spice. Liviana doesn’t care at all about the Fae Prince who has come to marry one of her sisters, but gasp! Shock! Liviana is the one chosen, and suddenly she’s on the road with the aloof prince and the very attractive fae soldier set to guard her.

Listen, we all know the beats. Reluctant, sheltered princess. Conquering ruler that must be appeased. Some instant, forbidden attraction. This short story strings together familiar tasty romantic moments with just as much politics (insert “but the fae started a terrible war!” and “your kingdom oppresses women!” here) as needed to support the appearance of conflict, which only adds fuel to Liviana and the soldier’s tension, show more of course.

Perhaps due to the short format, Liviana’s thought process becomes a bit repetitive (see previously mentioned politics), but it’s an easy read and I’d be curious to pick up more from this author the next time I’m in the mood for fae romance.

When I requested this from LibraryThing's Giveaways, I didn't realize it was so short. It only took me 20-30 minutes to read. But even so, it was well-paced and the writing enjoyable, and I found I was sad it was over. But you can get a bonus chapter if you follow the instructions at the end of the book. Still, this could have made a very good full-length book. All the elements were there, so there was enough to keep building on, especially with the war, her missing friend, and the views the Sun Fae have towards humans and women. But that's just me being selfish because I enjoyed it and wanted more. That probably means that I need to read more of the author's works, and I very likely will.

While the ending was a little predictable, the show more story did make me second-guess whether my hunch was correct. And I don't think there's anything wrong with a little predictability, especially if we're enjoying ourselves. And I did enjoy myself - I enjoyed the banter between Livinia and Arik, and I appreciated her parents' perspective regarding why they wanted her to be the one chosen by the prince. I always love a fiery FMC who is unwilling to make herself less than or allow herself to be tamed by anyone.

Tropes/Themes:
- Arranged marriage
- Mistaken identity
- She carries a grudge/hatred for his realm, but he's not what she expected
- insta-attraction

I received a copy of this book and am leaving a fair and honest review.

Love, love, loved this! So much so, I wish it was about 400 pages longer and dove into all the details of families and political history and world building - on and on. I read this in about 45 minutes but it felt like 10 because I was so entranced in the storytelling. I loved the attitude of Liviana, Arik's immediate respect and longing, mom's seemingly poised self that secretly knows her girl - just overall WONDERFUL! 5 stars, hands down. Please turn this into a 400+!!

I LOVE S.D. Horton. This short read was amazing. Packed with everything from desire, love, a bit of fight, and a bit of mystery. Proof that a great book doesn’t have to be long or drawn out.

2.5 stars

The writing was good but the story was very basic. It's very short, so I understand there wasn't time to develop the story and the characters, but now it just felt very shallow.

I didn't like the main character. She's in a very privileged position and doesn't seem to take any responsibility. The Prince was more interesting, but still, not developed enough.

Also, I wouldn't call this a very spicy book, more steamy.

This was such a fun short story that kept attention from the beginning! The characters were well developed and had amazing detail to who they were.
If this was a full book I’d 100% buy it immediately and add it to my library to read.
