The vampire detective is driven to alienate his friends.
Much better than the first season, but that's not saying much. Once again, in the moments when it lets itself have fun, it's kind of nice. Those moments are much more frequent than season one, but still not enough. Most of the season's story is all about making someone who broods a lot brood more than usual.

A vampire has a detective agency.
A silly premise, spun off of a silly show, about a Very Serious character, taking itself Very Seriously. In the brief moments when it lets itself have fun, it's kind of nice. 95% of the time, it's extremely boring. They should have written out this Angel character and made the show about Phantom Denis.

I did not believe or like the premise. I liked much about individual episodes, including Spike's narrow escape and the departure of Cordie. I wished it had another season; I would have liked to seen how Whedon's plans for Fred/demon queen worked out.
A vampire is CEO of a law firm.
And suddenly Angel is fun. It's not good enough to make four seasons of crap worth watching, but season five is finally the sort of thing I'd expected from a Buffy spin-off.
