- Short biography
- Luis Alfaro is a highly acclaimed Chicano playwright, performance artist, director, and social activist who grew up in Los Angeles. Renowned for his adaptations of classic Greek tragedies set within modern Chicano barrios (Electricidad, Oedipus El Rey, Mojada), his career spans multiple decades of localized community organizing and vanguard queer advocacy. His sweeping creative accolades include the 1998 National Hispanic Playwriting Competition and a prestigious [MacArthur "Genius" Foundation Fellowship in 1997](1.2.3, 1.2.8). Alfaro spent decades working as an Associate Artistic Director at the Center Theatre Group and teaching within the MFA Dramatic Writing program at the University of Southern California. He is an openly gay theater maker whose dramatic canon serves as a cornerstone for contemporary Chicanx queer and working-class representation
