Roland Schimmelpfennig

A customer suggested Roland S. as an author I might find interesting. His description brought to mind Handke, with whom I have become increasingly less enchanted over the decades. The prose piece he recommended is not currently available in the US and, as I enjoy reading plays, I opted for this as a starting place. Though the play is structured to be read, with both filmic devices and non-dialogue narration essential to any understanding of it, it was obviously meant to be, and has been, show more staged. I kept trying to envision that scenario, but eventually gave up on it.

The play itself has elements I love: strained relationships, both domestic and familial; an other intruding upon this strained domesticity; and a child as witness. I kept thinking of Alan Ayckbourn's "Season's Greetings," and making comparisons thereof. Pinteresque touches are there as well, but more and more, as I neared its end, I realised that nothing was being commented upon or, if it was, it escaped me. I found this striking and familiar and absorbing; and yes I recognize the bias of my love for Berlin in a particular era. But this is a beautiful portrait of exactly that uneasy time and place, and I love it for that, for the sharp icy prose, for its allusions and questions.

Un libro che si legge velocissimo, scritto con dei cambi di scena velocissimi e capitoli molto brevi (l'autore nasce come drammaturgo e a volte sembra di leggere un'opera teatrale più che un romanzo).
Le vite di diverse persone ruotano attorno ad un Lupo che viene avvistato vicino a Berlino e che diventa per alcuni un'ossessione, per altri una via di fuga e per altri ancora una semplice curiosità.
Troviamo due adolescenti scappano, una coppia di fidanzati polacchi con difficili decisioni da show more prendere, una coppia che gestisce un negozio a Berlino.
Attorno alla vicenda del lupo si dipanano tutte le storie personali di questi protagonisti in un vortice che a volte li farà convergere e a volte li terrà separati.
Un libro piacevole, lascia tutto un po' sospeso, come se avessimo potuto vedere solo una finestra nella vita di queste persone, la stessa finestra che ha osservato il lupo nella sua permanenza nei boschi! show less
