The Spectral Jew: Conversion and Embodiment in Medieval Europe (Medieval Cultures) by Steven F. Kruger
My only issue with this excellent book is Kruger's take on the embodiment of Jews. Certainly, Jews were made more 'embodied' and thus feminized by the dominant culture(s), but I think we should read this against mainstream resurrection doctrine and its version of the body. In other words, I think taking the Jews as more scandalously, fluidly embodied would have worked well, as mainstream resurrection doctrine imagined the ideal self as not bodiless but in made up of an impassable, firmly show more bounded body.
Again, that's my only issue. show less
