Raven and the Tide Lady is based on the ancient Northwest Coast Raven stories. This story is about how Raven fights with the old Tide Lady, who is keeping the tide high and never letting it go out, so none of the animals can gather the food they need from the beach. The editors point out that Raven isn't held up as a model of good behavior, but instead as a character who illustrates an important understanding about life, the natural world, or the interactions between them. The beautiful show more watercolor illustrations are by Caldecott winning Tlingit artist Michaela Goade show less
In this folktale, the Trickster Raven must find a way to change the mind of a stubborn Tide Lady who refuses to let the tide go down. With the help of some friends, the mink and the magpie, they are able to reach an agreement to regulate the tide so that creatures may gather clams, gumboots, and seaweed at low tide. Serene watercolor illustrations add to the magic of this Alaskan folktale.
This children's tale has been passed down through generations of Northwestern and Alaskan tribes. the main character is a raven who learns life lessons and information through experience. In the Origins of rivers and streams, Raven learns how the rivers and streams were brought to the Earth and its people and the respect we must give them. Pictures are very detailed, hand drawn, realistic images of the Alaskan landscape.
