This is the story of a man who believes that the dodo bird is actually not extinct at all, and a dodo bird who escaped his native island unharmed, and took up residence in New York City where he can live happily. One day the man is in the park, and he sees the dodo bird, and he vows to catch the bird, so he can show everyone he was right about the dodo birds not being extinct. The man spends all of his time trying to catch the dodo, but this dodo is too smart to be caught. One day the dodo show more realizes that he was having fun running away when the man tries to catch him, and he is lonely without the man. The dodo goes to the park and see's the man sleeping on a bench, and got so excited that he started to do the dodo dance! The man sees the dodo dancing and is surprised because he didn't know dodo's could dance. He decided that he shouldn't put the dodo in a cage somewhere because he wouldn't be able to do is beautiful dance. I really liked this book because it is a way to teach children about animals that are extinct, and what they used to be like. It is also a great way to discuss how maybe it isn't a great idea to keep wild animals captive in zoo's or places like that. Finally it teaches kids resilience and to never give up on what you think is right, or things you believe in even if everyone else thinks you are crazy! show less
A very odd book, with a bit of innocent ignorance butting up against the world-weary outlook of a city dweller.
