I read about a dog found in a dumpster who was adopted by Bernadette Peters in the book 'DAWGS: A True Story of Lost Animals and the Kids Who Rescued Them' by Diane Trull and Meredith Wargo. That book mentioned this book so I wanted to get it to support Bernadette's good deed.
The book is a fun children's book with nice illustrations by Liz Murphy. I think the illustrations display a bold fun style, but don't look for works of art. I especially loved the map of the United States with the show more route though the states between New York and Texas.
I enjoyed the story. I think people who rescue dogs are hero's, and to go all that way to rescue a dog is really going the extra mile. The story speaks of how her existing dog has a period of getting used to having a new dog. That and other details make it feel like the author was writing of the actual experiences and didn't have to make anything up.
Seems like a very good book to read with children and then talk about it. How far would we go to help a dog in need? How much would you expect an old dog to welcome a new dog? Wonder what the states they go through are like, and where is our state located? Sigh, still hoping for grandchildren. show less
