Short biography
Pauline Schmitt-Pantel is a French historian of ancient Greek culture and religion. She earned her master's degree at the University of Lyon II with a thesis on public banquets in Greek cities. She passed the agrégation (civil service exam) in 1969 and taught history and geography in high schools before becoming assistant professor of Ancient History at the University of Paris VII-Denis Diderot in 1971. With Fabienne Bock and Michelle Perrot, in 1973 she created the first course on women's history at that university. From 1988 to 1997, she was professor of Greek History at the University of Picardie, and from 1997 to 2010 at the University of Paris I-Panthéon-Sorbonne. She is the author of numerous books, including Religion in the Ancient Greek City (1993). With Georges Duby and Michelle Perrot, she co-edited the 5-volume History of Women in the West (1991-1992). She retired in 2010.
