Captures the sense of children, from their point of view, of not wanting to be assigned to a particular role, and to be accepted for who they are. The book does affirm gender and transgender diversity, embraces children for their full range of being, and expresses the difficulties children face when they don't conform to others' expectations. However, the book doesn't really draw me in, perhaps because I don't spend enough time with any of the characters to really get to know them.
This is written in verse and highlights lots of different children, struggles and friendships. Each page highlights a different child - a boy with long hair, a girl who likes soccer, a kid dressed as a princess and a child bullied on the playground. Through it all, the children are asking to be accepted for who they are - not stereotypes.
