About the Author

Steven A. Riess taught American history for thirty-five years at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, retiring as Bernard Brommel Research Professor, emeritus. The former editor of the Journal of Sport History, he is the author or editor of several books including The Sport of Kings and the show more Kings of Crime: Horse Racing, Politics, and Crime in New York, 1865-1913 (2011), which was a finalist for "Best Book on Non-Fiction," from the Society of Midland Authors, Touching Base: Professional Baseball and American Culture in the Progressive Era, rev. ed., (1999), and City Games: The Evolution of American Society and the Rise of Sports (1989), and editor of Sports in America: From Colonial Times to the Twenty-First Century, three vols. (2011). He has been the recipient of several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The first edition of Sport in Industrial America, 1850-1920 was recognized by Choice magazine as an "Outstanding Academic Title" for 1996. show less
