This is probably the most wholesome novel I have ever read. Despite being rather unlikely, I enjoyed the angst and insecurity. A few minor quibbles: I would have preferred Jessy's angst/uncertainty about Michael's ex to have been more focused on his feelings for Ann - she caught them kissing for god's sake, and Ann told her they still slept together. The whole notion that she had a shot in hell at taking away Michael's custody was just too absurd for me to take seriously as a point of show more tension. I loved Jessy's insecurity about her figure, but she didn't seem to be terribly concerned about the possibility of Michael still being in love or having the hots for his ex-wife; the angst was almost all focused on Ann's place as the kids' mother. I'm generally pretty "meh" about kids in storylines, and this is no exception, but of course it comes with the territory in this book. While I might be able to forgive the insta-love between Jessy and Michael, the easy, fast acceptance from the kids is pretty implausible. And Ann and her becoming friends?? ...why? Speaking of why, at the end, Jessy muses, "I wonder what Charlie will say when I tell him we're engaged?" What the hell? Why would she ever talk to that douche again??? While there are several elements to this story that are not my cup of tea, there is so much good angst and insecurity that I ended up liking it. Lots of great lines in here that do an excellent job explaining how it feels to be an overlooked, overweight woman. (3.5 stars) show less
Existentialism. Drama. Zombies. Total annihilation... “Abominations”. The main theme is zombies and apocalyptic type stories, so if you are into that sort of thing (and I know that you are, sickos) then I would strongly recommend this collection of short stories.
I know that at some point people can get sick of zombie stories—but zombie stories are like drama stories; I mean, we have soap operas dedicated to melodrama. We have dramatic crime shows. We have dramatic cinema…and we have show more zombies. Is this a stretch? Possibly, but Rebecca Brock is a very entertaining and imaginative writer. She brings zombies, demons, and naked women with morbid desires straight into your home like cockroaches; only, you have the fortune to not have to purchase any pesticides. Or weaponry. Who will ultimately survive when the zombie apocalypse comes knocking down the door, smashing wooden fences, and breaking windows… ? show less
