Under-cover FBI Lesbians pretending to be a couple and desperately trying to ignore their attraction to one another to investigate a creepy town in the grip of a cult led by a scary old lady? And there’s only 1 bed? Sign me up
Crime with a splash of lesbian, yes please!
I really loved the way Gerri Hill approached this story, which is about the hunt for a serial killer. It is unusual in that the serial killer aspect of the story is a slow burn and doesn’t really start in the first half of the book.
The story is beautifully written and the late introduction of the serial killing aspect of the story is just so well done.
In addition to the unusual story structure, you are drawn into the relationship between the two show more women because they do not meet for the first third of the book which adds to the unusual style. Each chapter alternates between the women and describes their back stories to the point of their first meeting. And what an exquisite meeting!
These alternating chapters give you additional insight into the characters and their motivations. It also means that as the hunt for the serial killer begins you understand the different decisions the women make. The observation of the trails and the area around the cabins makes it easy to understand the wilderness aspects of some parts of the story. show less

This isn’t my normal type of review – and there’s a spoiler about the storyline, so be warned.
On the one hand this is a lighthearted enjoyable read about slightly older women in a small town searching for love. Its starts with a bunch of single friends and through a series of sometimes funny and sometime poignant happenings we get to the expected happy ever after. It's full of humour and the main relationship is delightful to watch.
As with all Gerri Hill’s books its well written and show more crafted, well edited. I liked the main characters, particularly Leah who I thought was a particularly gentle and genuine woman. At times I was slightly frustrated by the amount of emphasis on “I am too old to fall in love” or “They cant possibly get together they are too old”.. I don’t know how old Gerri Hill is but at 52 I certainly hope to fall in love again.
However one of the storylines is one older woman bullying another character. This is going to be controversial, and I think many women will be upset and offended. If ‘light hearted’ emotional abuse done as teasing and playing around, but taken too far, will upset you, don’t read it.
It didn’t completely ruin the book for me, but I think the plot could have started with this storyline as a tool to create the situation, then it could have been dealt with much earlier and the moral of the story not allowed the perpetrator to get off with ‘sorry’ and get her own HEA ending.
I normally love Gerri Hill’s books, and it’s great to see a story about older women finding love, just unfortunate in how one storyline has been dealt with. show less

I haven't read one of these sorts of books in the longest time. Usually I'm about 85-100% sure that something will have a Happily Ever After ending, but with this one I was more like 30% sure or even less because of that first chapter. Yikes that first chapter.
It's the story of Jill and Carrie. They are both married to men, although not in the happiest of ways. Jill especially, even before she meets Carrie in the park during her lunch break, is having problems with her husband and daughter. show more Carrie's husband seems to just be absent. Then, Carrie and Jill meet at the park, and they become friends first, but, of course, then start becoming more as well. And, then, *sigh*, something horrible happens.
As I said above. I haven't read a story like this in a while (if ever), and so some of it was very jarring (cheating is not my favorite relationship trope to read, but Hill did a very good job with that part of the story I thought). Overall, though, I thought it was a good book with interesting characters who drove the novel (instead of just the plot driving the novel, since, heh, there wasn't much plot).
A good (not surprisingly so) Gerri Hill novel for sure. show less
