There's no doubt this series is corny, but it does have its hilarious and romantic moments. And there's heaps of witty banter, which is my weakness. Nick Russo is superb at teasing out every ounce of humour from the text.
Cal is a total character - an ex-actor now grocery store worker who is also running his own business doing voice overs in his sound studio. Russ is a meticulously organised finance guy who runs the scouting club, the Falcons. His son is a member, and Cal's son wants to join. show more Hence, the two dads are thrown together.
Cal is messy and chaotic, but cool. Russ is hot but not cool - as Cal says, he's as cool as a flat cola. Everyone loves the friendly helpful Cal, and he is empathetic enough to pick up on the fact that underneath it all Russ is a caring guy.
Only a Cal could excavate the fun that lies buried in the strict, picky Russ - who of course is disciplined enough to have a great body - that would be Cal's reward!
The joy of this story lies in the tension between opposites.
This is my fifth A J Truman - 3 of these are from the Browerton University series and they have all been great. show less

The Publisher Says: You better watch out. You better not cry. Hot Mall Santa is coming to town!
Instead of round and jolly, this year’s mall Santa is chiseled and smoldering. The second he strolls into Oakville Mall wearing sunglasses, stubble, and his Santa hat cocked to the side, Santa gets all the tongues wagging—especially Tom Webster’s. A lowly retail associate at The Décor Store, Tom spends his time chasing a promotion and boss that are both out of reach. His fantasies about show more being a ho-ho-ho for Santa soon cross into reality after an unexpected night together. While the rest of the town obsesses over Hot Mall Santa, Tom gets to know the sweet, nerdy history buff under the suit and six-pack abs. But to win Santa’s heart, he must fight off the lusty moms, adoring fans, and his own fear of rejection.
Hot Mall Santa is a fun and sexy novella at 32,000 words filled with nutty Christmas shoppers, a grown man wearing reindeer antlers, and too many holiday puns.
THIS WAS A YULE GIFT FROM DEAR, SWEET RONI. THANK YOU!
My Review: Cute'n'steamy...the line forms out the mall doors to get some lap time with Hot Mall Santa!
You're getting just what it says on the package: hot guy does crummy job & looks great doing it.
Poor guy...he's not even taken at face value, just value of face. What makes it Xmas fun us that job is being Santa. What a cute Horny Hallmark this would be! And the pleasure of Tom waking up to being used by his boss...Randall being such a mensch...it's got the Holiday formula down.
There's no time like the present to get your good luck handled. And handle him Tom does! The charm of sex scenes with plenty of detail will likely be lost on the straighter folk. You're not likely to get the "ordinary-guy-bags-the-buff-bod" now are you? Haw! There was an entire film about that, the woman was tubby and the guy thought she was gorgeous and people lapped it up...so don't prim your lips and start carryin' on about objectifyin' and such-like quite so fast.
What makes this story fun to read is the way the author decided to make the pretty-boy hung like a stallion and good with it into a nerd. It's like discovering Henry Cavill plays video games and TTRPGs and the like. He's proof that Randall isn't a complete fantasy object. This was harmless fun, spiced with hot sex and sweet lovingkindness.
They got out of the car. A light dusting of snow began to fall from the sky. It was nothing a Midwesterner couldn’t handle. Tom doubted it would even stick to the roads. Randall treated it as the most beautiful precipitation he’d ever seen. It was probably his first white Christmas. He held his hands out to touch it, lifted his head, laughed as it dotted his cheeks. Who knew that beneath the raging sex appeal, there would be a layer of dorkiness, and that it could be nothing short of adorable?
You're getting exactly what it says on the package, so is that what you want? It was what I wanted and it went down a treat. show less

“He was like the living embodiment of sex. His beard was pulled down, and he had these amazing cheeks and jaw. It’s like whatever the cheek and jaw equivalent is to an ass you can bounce a quarter off of.”
You're getting just what it says on the package: hot guy does crummy job & looks great doing it.
“It’s weird when all people do is compliment something about you that you had no part in. It’s not like being praised for something I’ve done or made. Just something I am. Like a zoo animal.”

He grabbed at Randall’s faux fur-trimmed lapels and pulled him closer, shoving his tongue into his pretty, Hot Mall Santa mouth. His hands traveled across his chest and tumbled down his washboard ads. Tom had thought that washboard abs were something that only existed in cologne ads.

The guy who broke my heart is back and teaching at my school. I’m really trying not to give him an F.
Ten years later, Hutch returns to his hometown to take care of his father and start his new job as coach and gym teacher. At his old high school, the one where his ex is a teacher as well.
In this first installment of the South Rock High School series, A.J. Truman gives us a view or perhaps, for some, a memory of high school culture with a look back at the 1990’s. At that time Hutch, was a show more soccer prodigy, and he and Amos were eagerly anticipating their prom. it only took a short time before circumstances quickly ended that. All it took was one single text to break up their plans. Later, Amos does learn that it was just one person that had threatened outing Hutch and that would have ended, for him, any future sports career plans.
Ten years go by, and those ten years make a difference. Amos now teaches at the school that he had formerly attended. Hutch shows up at the same school as a temporary coach. A knee injury had ended his professional career. The two guys talk. Amos really does try to stay clear of the man who had abandoned him, but Circumstances drive them directly to each other, and the romance begins, thanks to Hutch’s father.
This is a "happy ever" after story, but like some other of this author's books, the adventure to that happiness is laced with some light angst. There is a challenge about a grade that is given to the soccer team's star player that gets him removed from the team and puts Coach Hutch’s hopes of advancing to the next level of high school soccer, and fulfilling the legacy that Hutch had had when he was the player...to an end. That particular episode is one of the best "happenings" in the book. It showcases the sports and academic high school tensions that exist in every school. This book is also a part of a high school "atmospheric world: that was created by A.J. Truman with this one and the "Single Dads" series. Both well worth the read.
The author, as always, did a great job building the tension between Amos and Hutch with their baggage and the unresolved feelings they had for one another. They didn't immediately jump back into bed with one another...but they do get there eventually. This is written so well that you can actually feel Amos's hurt, and how hard Hutch worked to rebuild the trust that had been lost between them. Their world had a lived-in feel. The best thing is that we have more books in this world to read and enjoy. show less

A no-strings-attached hookup with his "straight" roommate? Mac thought he had hit the jackpot. After he was dumped and evicted by his last boyfriend, Mac needed a place to live ASAP. But room with Gideon??? The guy who held off announcing he was straight until after Mac kissed him two years ago??? Sure, Gideon’s still his charming, popular self. And his love of walking around the apartment shirtless is a nice perk. Mac could look and not touch, until one drunken night when there’s lots show more of touching.
Two years ago, Mac met Gideon at a party the start of freshman year. Mac thought there was great chemistry, and he was reading all the signs correctly, but when Mac kissed Gideon, Gideon freaked out and ran away. Now, it's two years later and they haven’t spoken a word to each other and Gideon refused to even be friends. But now Gideon needs a roommate, and Mac needs a place to live, so our two guys decide to give it a shot.
Things were a bit rough at first. Gideon is a "neat freak", and Mac is anything but.... not to mention the tension that exits between them. Neither have forgotten two years ago. They eventually settle in as roommates, and they slowly begin to become friends. They bond over recent breakups, and they start to share more about themselves and their families during late nights while eating mac and cheese. Mac has had a bad history with his parents who quickly rejected him as a teen. Gideon places pressure on himself to be the “good son,” sacrificing his own happiness to avoid rocking the boat with his family...so they both have some issues they are dealing with and can share with one another.
The chemistry that was between them as freshman is still there. and they start hooking up. Gideon starts experimenting with other men for the first time...so Mac knows he should not fall for Gideon. He's even still claiming that he's straight, but his feelings are growing stronger. The guys have to figure out now if there can be any type of real relationship between them, and if Gideon will be brave enough to reach for what he wants with Mac despite how others may feel.
The story starts out well... young love, college guys, roommates, and a twist of "enemies to lovers". Then when it picks up two years later, both of these guys have had relationships that just ended, and suddenly here they are face to face again. It takes a little bit for them to settle in together, and they start to build a solid friendship. For Mac, the attraction is still there, but he keeps reminding himself that Gideon is straight. This time, despite Gideon still claiming not to be gay, he is interested in some "experimentation". Where it all ran into trouble for me was that I honestly, never really liked Gideon to start with. He's having sex with Mac but he's still claiming to be straight. He invites himself along to a gay bar and then tells everyone he meets that he is straight. We could see how easily Gideon found it to lie about everything. He was so concerned about keeping up appearances and continually saying what people wanted to hear. These happenings continued through most of the book. I wanted to slap him upside the head!
Overall, A.J. Truman always does a nice job. In the end he pulled the story together. His stories are always fun, and I did enjoy this one, as well as all his others. If he keeps writing them, I'll keep buying and reading them...a win, win for both of us. show less
