Winslow Homer was one of the great American artists of the 19th century, with a palette including oils, watercolours, and engravings. This book focuses on the latter and nearly every single illustration is included. The reader can admire Homer's transition from early general engravings to his later masterpieces.

Chapters target his work on the American Civil War, Children, Ice Skating, Seabathing, and Women. When the nation put itself back together after its hardest war, Winslow illustrated show more the changing times with precision. As America started moving from rural work to city life, Winslow Homer was there to capture it for history.
