Wow! Wow! Wow! I am still amazed at what I read even after several days have passed. This was a beautifully written romantic suspense novel. I was on pins and needles throughout the entire book. I had the suspect pool, nicely narrowed down, but I was shocked when it was finally revealed who the mastermind was. It left me speechless as I never saw that one coming. I admit there were subtle signs pointing to this particular person, but I dismissed it as I believed that they just did not have show more it in them. It just goes to show things are never really what they seem. I don’t want to say too much about the plot as it may lead to spoilers. You will need to go into this story blindly.

HIS Choice by Sheila Kell is the second book in the HIS series. I enjoyed the first book in the series so I was glad to receive a complimentary copy of this installment in exchange for a honest review. I enjoyed this copy just as much as the first book. I guess by now you have figured based on my introduction that this story shocked my system. I found it to be an absorbing read.

In this installment, readers are introduced to Megan Rogers and A. J. Hamilton. Megan is an investigative journalist who is determined to uncover the identity of the Magician, the biggest crime lord in Baltimore. Her determination was fuelled by her desire to find out what happened to her brother who had gone missing. She is convinced that the Magician is responsible for his disappearance. While conducting her investigation, she ran into A.J who is working as an enforcer for the Magician. The chemistry between these two was so hot that for a moment I thought my Kindle would have caught on fire. What follows is a story of intense proportions.

The characters are real and easy to relate to. I found Megan to be tenacious when it came to getting a story. She did not stop to think of the danger associated with what she was doing, however, it was easy to understand her motivation. For her it was not just about getting a story, but uncovering the truth. It was this tenacity that placed her in the Magican’s crosshairs forcing A. J. to protect her at all cost. It was evident that A.J had secrets which he was not willing to reveal. This, however, proved difficult to hide given that he was in the company of a tenacious investigative journalist. Being on the run together led to them growing closer, thus allowing Megan to realise that A.J may not be what he seems. During this time the attraction that was evident from their first meeting grew with much intensity.

The story grabbed my attention from the first page. It flowed and the pacing was well balanced. The author’s writing style was amazing. She made everything come alive, so much that I felt I was a part of every scene.

HIS Choice is a gripping and intense read. It will appeal to fans of romance, mystery and suspense. This book kept me awake as I was intent on finishing it. Everything about this book had me hooked. I am now waiting with bated breath for the next book in the series.

I loved the tension between Kate and Jesse at the beginning and then once he inserts himself in her life to help keep her safe the feelings they have both been ignoring bubble up.
Having the mix of attraction and feistiness between Kate and Jesse while learning more about each other but still holding back along with the danger and getting to know the characters along with more about HIS was great and add in the Facilitator this was a great read and look forward to more in the series!!.

My first experience with Sheila Kell was when I read ‘HIS Desire’. I fell in love with her writing and since then I have been following the HIS series. ‘HIS Return is book #4 and can be read as a standalone. A note of warning though after reading one of these books you are going to want to read the remaining books.

This installment tells Emily and Jakes’ story. Emily had a crush on Jake since she was six years old. As she got older, her crush gradually grew into something more show more meaningful. Jake had found her crush amusing at first, but as she blossomed into a beautiful young lady he realised that what his feelings towards was not brotherly. On her 18th birthday, Emily decided that she would seduce Jake, however, this would lead to her and Jake being separated.

Fast forward 4 years later we see Jake contemplating his decision to run away that fateful day. I guess when you are faced with the prospect of death, it causes you to evaluate your life choices. This is the situation that Jake has found himself in. He realises that Emily was the only woman he ever loved and he may never have the chance to tell her how he feels. Fortunately, fate would step in and provide him with a second chance at redemption.
Emily has gotten the pieces of her life together since that night when Jake rejected her. She is a forensic accountant and works with a prestigious firm. She discovered that there were illegal financial dealings taking place within the firm. This discovery would place her as well as her family in danger. Added to this she had to deal with the emotional upheaval caused by Jake’s return.

Their reunion was bittersweet. Emily was glad to see that he was alive and well, however, she was not willing to trust that he was here to stay. I understood how she felt. Rejection is a hard pill to swallow, and to be rejected not once but twice by the person you love can be devastating. It was this devastation that Emily wanted to avoid. Jake would have to prove that he was worthy of her love, and she was not above making him jump through hoops to demonstrate it.

This installment took a different angle from the previous books. The focus was more on Emily and Jakes’ relationship. The attention that was given to the incident that placed Emily in danger took up about 30% of the story. It was not the fast-paced and suspenseful read that I was expecting. The story moved slowly, but I believe that this was a deliberate move by the author. I believe that her intent was for readers to be totally invested in Emily and Jakes’ journey towards healing, forgiveness, and new beginnings.

It was more on the emotional side which intensified as the story came to a close. There was a particular scene that brought tears to my eyes. For me, this was a great display of the ultimate sacrifice that a person could make for the ones they love. Shocking secrets came to life. I certainly did not see that coming but it certainly answered questions I had while reading the previous books.

VERDICT:
Although this was not what I had expected, it was still a good read. I loved this book and I am hoping that Tristan’s story will be next. I can’t wait to find out more about him.
RECOMMENDATION: For fans of emotional second chance romance.

I feel deadly betrayed, I love romance with mystery, but this book…

Cassie and JD were childhood sweethearts but they were separated as teenagers. Now life throws them back together to solve the murder of JD’s ex girlfriend.

My favorite thing about this book is that it was short, because unfortunately both the romance and the mystery felt flat. The storyline was mostly predictable and boring.
There were some potentially interesting plot twists but it was all poorly written so I didn’t show more really feel anything.

The characters were so underdeveloped that they felt like cardboard cutouts; there was a lot going on but it was barely reflected in the characters’ emotions. JD was mostly angry, and rightly so, but I would expect more feelings from him, there were good things happening for him too.
However the worst was Henry Kyle - a ten year old boy who was just, after five years, reunited with his father and whose mother had just been murdered. The kid was acting as if he was on vacation; perfectly relaxed, barely any tears. A normal little boy would be more devastated after losing his hamster.

All in all I’m glad it’s over…

Thank you Backlit PR and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
